I have to heat a large room, but the central heating is, for a few reasons, not heating. So what's the most efficient way of heating it using electricity? I've got a 2000kw oil radiator but it only takes the chill out, it doesn't get warm. the box says max 14p an hour so across 6 hrs a day its 84p a day - roughly £25 a month - on top of my usual heating bills, just to make sure a room isn't cold. any advice would be appreciated. Nick.

Hi

Think the box is a bit old. 2kW is 2 units an hour. Unit price will be at least 10p a unit during the day now, so it will cost you at least 20p an hour.

Beyond that just make sure the room is draft free (can get tape to make the windows and doors seal better). Double glaze the windows (even get the stick on clear film, be better than nothing).

All the best

Keith

Are your ceilings really high? , I recall Rene a girlie who was a friend of a friend, had a sort of hippy dome where she hung rugs from the walls and her house was like going into a tent , it was quite warm actually going in there, it trapped the heat I guess inside under the sheets.

Laughing have to agree, no matter how cold the room is, you'll always be warm.

Whats the issue with the C/H. Might be better to sort that, than spend on eletric in the long run.

Might be a simple fix like bleeding rad, or if its got one of then thermo valves on rad, the little pin underneath the cap not got stuck in has it, very common problem and easily fixed with a pair of plyers and a bit of lube.

I just read that you sleep better if your room is cold and you have enough blankets to keep you warm. Something to do with a drop in temperature telling your body it's time to sleep.

What you are not playing by the rules!

The game of increasing your carbon footprint are thus forth

And thus leaving your heating on all day costs YOU money = is not an efficient method of increasing your carbon foot print.

My new bosses are king at this , its cold in the office in the morning, so they turn on the heating , by 1030am it becomes like a sauna and everybody is sweating cobs and everybody gets hot and flustered and go all red faced in losing the excess heat.

Instead of turning down the heating they turn on the huge aircon device which turns on with a Buzzt! , and it cools down a bit.

Its something to do with the way the office is built in that it is a triple mezzanine type office and has some sort of microclimate which makes some areas extra cold while other areas extra hot.

To boot the front door is always kept adjar since the lock is broken we use a wedge of wood to keep it open, so that even more heat escapes.

Doesn't cost my bosses a penny , cus they have a rental agreement with the owners of the building which lasts another 19 months and in 19 months the company is moving elsewhere.

A ceiling fan set to "suck" instead of "blow", to move the warm air from the ceiling back down again works; all my rooms have one. Pick them up for £15 from Argos. It's great in the summer.

Remember soft furnishings are good insulators. Curtains, tapestries, rugs, etc are all good for keeping the heat in.
