Inspired by the fact that any body who joins the army tends to be super fit, I thought i'd have a look at specific fitness classes for people who don't want to be in the army, but want the disipline to really lose the weight and get fit, I saw this https://www.britmilfit.com/index.aspx

Thought what a good idea, anybody been on these type of classes?

Only problem is that they have no locations in the West Midlands.

There was a thread about the Army Brit Fit Classes on BCF a few months (maybe 6 or more) ago JB - Can't seem to find it I'm afraid.

I've had no experience whatsoever although I'm told they're pretty good. I'm too old for Muck 'n nettles fitenss now, give me a treadmill, ipod, drinks fountain and a centrally heated gym any day of the week Wink

For Chrissake, you lot have got no imagination whatsoever.

1. Get your Dad to wake you up a 5.30am by using a golf Club (preferably 3 wood or a flat faced iron) to the torso method.

2. Go outside and find a neighbour with a Banger Racing car on a trailer in their front garden and go around to the rear of the property - it'll be fifty times as messy and full of broken glass, oil drums, dog crap and grass that hasn't been cut since the Summer of '66.

3. Do 30 laps of the garden in hobnail boots, a pair of boxers and a running vest whilst being served a contiunal volley of abuse by your dad 'cos '...Your Fockin Fat backside bent my Favourite Driving Iron'. and 'You're 30 years of age and still living at friggin Home'.

Repeat 3 times a week.

Hey Presto Brit Military Fit Thumbs Up

30 - 40 quid a month?!?! Shocked

Squaddies keep fit by running fucking loads, sit ups and press ups.

Save your money and get an angry mate to shout encouragement at you.

I did that for a couple of months here in Battersea Park, but I couldn't commit to being there 6.45pm once, let alone twice a week. Wish I had been, as it was brilliant and my level of fitness improved hugely.

In London, the evenings classes were split into novices, interns and advanced, but the weekend ones weren't, which meant there was no way I could have done them. I tried once, but it was too tough. Sad

When I started, I was struggling to jog to the warm-up area about 200m up the road, and I could not complete the 20min warm-up without stopping all the time (alternating between jogging, running and jumping). After 3-4 lessons, I quite happily completed the warm-up and didn't nearly die several times during the one-hour lesson.

After the warm-up, you alternate between jogging/running a few hundred meters to a meeting point, where you either do exercises, circuit training or relay race with your team members. You do about four of these stops and they are a killer! Then you finish with a nice longer run and a cool-down.

The good thing is that you cannot stop, no matter how unfit you are, you've got to keep going, as otherwise you're letting everybody down, and the sergeant major will shout at you to keep going. You're not allowed to stand around with hands on the hips; if you're caught, you have to do ten star jumps or something like that, so it encourages you to jog on the spot while you wait for the others to finish.

It's actually the only time I've enjoyed 'going to the gym' in the last ten years, and definitely the only time I've seen results!

Sound like the exact sort of thing I need and as i'm under 21 it would only be £20 a month for unlimited sessions. Damn living in W. Mids.

Surely there has got to be another scheme like this somewhere?

Just had another look at the site and see that they are setting one up at the War Memorial park in Coventry, bingo! Very Happy

I'm gonna join, hopefully this will be the push I need to shift the weight.

Where does it say that?
I might go along to the first session, see whether it's worth 20 minutes down the road over the gym. Evidence of my lethargy.. Laughing

Take up boxing/Muay Thai or any martial art where the trainer includes lots of circuit training.

I've seen 10yr old kids that would run rings around a quite a few soldiers in terms of fitness.

I was doing the BMF classes for a while, and KTMGordo has been dpoing them for years.. I can highly recommend them.

Very motivational,
covers proper cardio-vascular and general workouts
a FULL hour of working out
Good social stuff surrounding it

and if you pay for one class in your area, you can go to any class in any other area too.

The whole point of the fitness classes is that you can have military esque fitness training, without having to be in the army. I don't want to be in the armed forces thank you very much.

Just to dig this thread up.

I'm heading to my first Britmilfit tomorrow evening giving the free taster session a go. I've had it with the gym, too boring and can't seem to motivate myself to go enough to justify the £73 a month fee. Britmilfit is about half that and the two people at work who I know that go absolutely love it so I'm going to have a go.

Need to get my fitness levels right up as I'm bored with being out of shape. Going to combine these classes with a bit of squash. Just had enough of doing the same old crap at the gym.

Let us know how it get's on, Coventry's is meant to be opening in April.

Although i'm having doubts as I think I may be slightly young, looking at the photo's it is mainly 30 year olds etc, might feel out of place. Confused

Will do.

I think the age thing is irrelevant - it's your fitness level that's more important as you'll be grouped based on that not age.

Well I went last night and can say that it was pretty tough going and I was in the n00b group.

Started with a jog over to the park from the meeting place and a steady 20 minute warm up.

Then it was another 40 minutes of various stuff - sprints, jogs, sit ups, press ups etc. You never stop so is pretty intense. Even when the instructor is explaining the next round of stuff you have to jog on the spot.

Today I ache pretty bad. Thighs - front and back, and across my chest and down my lats. Never got that from the gym so it seems the Britmilfit class pushed me much harder than I ever pushed myself at the gym. It forces you to leave your comfort zone.

I signed up for Britmilfit today and cancelled my Esporta membership. Says it all really.

Considered this a while back, would have to cancel my gym membership as im not paying £80 a month on fitness.... thing is, its same price as my gym membership... but you don't get all the machines and tennis and stuff like the gym.. but then I find it hard to get motivated to go to gym and when I do go the workout probably isn't as effective as the britmil one.. thats what makes it tempting, would force me to pull my finger out...

Joe, keep us updated how you're finding it...
