I bought Black & White, by EA Games, when it first came out. I messed about for ages trying to get it working on an XP machine. I never did get it working.

I decided that I would try again to get it working and discovered that there are now a few patches to aid my in my quest.

The game now runs but I get garbled graphics flickering on and off. Below is an example.

Does anyone know what this could be? I have just got the most recent drivers from nVidia so I cant see it being that anymore.

Cheers
PJ

have you tried installing the latest direct x?

or possibly try posting on a black & White forum?

oh yeah, possibly try your original gfx card drivers.

i have a gf3ti500 but it doesnt like any drivers other than the original ones. i find almost everything works with the original drivers but most stuff crash's with the most recent ones, or anything newer.

Latest version of Direct X is v9 is'nt it? Ill go check though.

The card I am using is a 'Sparkle' nVidia GeForce 4 mx440 PCI 64MB.

Wouldnt know where to get the original drivers, I can not find the disk, (but will look) most sites just keep the updates online dont they? Or are there sites that have all original files too?

What versions of what drivers do you have, Hippy?

I just un-installed B&W and un-installed my nVidia card. Installed from the original disk, then installed the game.

At first it would not work again but I tried the v1.20 patch from GameSpot.com.

With this patch, the game runs but will stop (close) whenever I click my mouse. This did not happen before when I first posted this thread. The graphics problem seems to have gone though.

I have just downloaded the latest drivers from Logitech.com and it still does it. Confused

Re install the game. You've probably just got a corrupt install. Restart the machine in between removing and installing it.

Un-installed the game, then re-booted and then re-installed the game. The game did not load so I instaleld the v1.20 patch again and the game now loads but still the same issue with the mouse.

Any mouse click will minimise the game, bring the windows desktop to the front then close the game.

Blame winblows. You probably need to format and start again now. Twice. As is the way with MicroShaft products...

a GF4 isn't a DX9 card. maybe put DX8 back on? Do your other games work as badly. I had a GF4 ti 4200 that did a similar thing because it was knackered. I just sent it back and got a 9500pro as they are much better.
if all else fails, blaming XP is probably the best idea. Very Happy

Did not actually install DX9, I have just checked and it is DX8 that is installed.

The game will load up and play but i'm back to the dodgy graphics again.

I rolled back the mouse driver to a generic microsoft one from XP, I think thats what sorted out the desktop issue. Now I just want the graphics sorted again.

I'm back to using the latest drivers from nVidia as there was no difference once I installed the original drivers from the disk.

Hippy, what version of what GFX card etc are you using? Did you have any problems at all when you first installed the game?

Never had any other problems at all with 3D applications.

I did have a Hercules prophet 4000XT but is was not compatable with one of my games so I changed it. Other than that I never had any other problems with that either.

PJ, no idea what drivers I'm using at the moment (I'm at work), but I will take a look when I get home.
I have never had any problems with B&W at all (apart from loosing all my saved games after Windows crashed). I usually run drivers from the nvidia page rather than the 'tweaked' vendor ones though.
