So there you have it people. Previously known as J P Morgan & Co (which you'll be familiar with from part 3 of Zeitgeist), JPMorgan is now employing our beloved Tony Bliar with a 1m / year job.

I just think if you serve a full term as PM, you should then be retired for the rest of your life, they give you a little house, and you get your meals paid for etc.
But you're not allowed to own ANYTHING, or indeed have any money or anything else. Being PM should mean giving up the rest of your life for the good of the country. And your only role will be helping to advise the next PM (which i think would probably be useful).
Of course, if you did that no bugger would want to be PM, but at least it'll help cut down on the corruption a bit...

The actual only realistic option is to pay them millions, I don't like it nor I doubt would you.
In that big PLCs have bosses that are all paid millions and millions , this attracts the BEST talent out there to do the job. Football clubs know this , so do PLCs.
And since they are being paid millions and millions , they won't have a need to join such companies in their retirement.
Also on the flip side bribes would have to be MUCH MUCH larger and thus easier to catch , ie a certain MP who was caught not declaring 100K , when his salary is about 70K a 100K bribe is 100+% of his income,
Now if he is paid say 30 million a year, small easy to hide bribes won't happen benefit vs chance of being caught since a 1mil bribe is only 1/30th rather than 1000% of his salary.
Unpleasant but probably necessary,
But this doesn't contra the factor of human greed in that virtually all of us could live happily the rest of our lives with 2 million in the bank , yet you get certain people who have 100 million in the bank , yet still want more.
Hell you get people with 50bn in the bank and still want more. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will. In the end, your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching. |

So your idea was what again? That we should pay them a vast quantity even though that isnt going to stop them wanting more...
Pay them nothing. That way, only people lunatic enough to actually want to do it for the right reasons, or the simply the power mad of course, would do it...
And we get the occasional power mad lunatic anyway, might as well save some cash...

The whole system.. of politicians being paid a far higher income than the average citizen... is silly.
By rewarding politicians with wages that are 5/6x that of the minimum wage, and (at a rough guess) 2x that of the average income... (And that's not including all the stuff they get to write off as 'expenses')... We are putting politicians in a class above the average man.
Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't democracy all about giving power to the average man?
The system we have at the moment, democracy gives power to the average man, but forces him to pass that power on to the 'higher' classes in society.
How can politicians possibly know what is best for the average citizen when they all live such comfortable and detached lives from the rest of us?
Gordon Brown never has to worry about getting mugged as he walks to the shop by rotten little kids hanging around on the street corner. Neither does any politician - you can guarantee that they live in the nicest area's that they can afford.
We're essentially back to the old 'Lord Lives In His Castle Whilst The Peasants Roll In Pig Shit'. It's just disguised behind a thin veil of votes.
The system is flawed, we're starting to see the effect of the flaws, and the common citizen, as usual, is the one who will bear the brunt of the problems that the greedier elements of society will inflict upon them.
There is no wealth like knowledge, no poverty like ignorance. ____________________ Yamaha YB100 | Yamaha TZR125 | Yamaha XJ600S | Suzuki GSF600

You misread me I mean it like a vicar's Stipend, ie they are paid a large wedge during their work , with a performance related pay package like bosses of big PLCs get.
Afterwards are never allowed to work again.
But the thing is if you pay them nothing what happens? , it encourages even more corruption.
And changes that NEED to occur don't occur, hell alot of people have bad things to say about Thatcher but without her we would still be building cars (British Leyland) nobody wanted, etc
The big problem is we need engineers , social psychologists ,economics grads and doctors to be in positions of power, wheras currently we have a bunch of (mostly) lawyers. We also need a dose of long termism rather than super short term visions most governments have. Probably why dictators get things done.
Your POV also forgets about the ruthlessness of humans , the British have a legendary example of this Nelson, he saved England quite a few times, he came back and was torn apart by the newspaper cartoonists. It is also reputed Sun Tzu (who was actually called Wu) took off after he'd won a great number of battles for his master.
And thus you have to ensure you look after yourself too. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will. In the end, your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching. |
