I was fixing my bike and fitting hot grips to it pretty much all day yesterday, towards the end of the job I used WD40 to spray all the nuts, bolts etc that looked like they were going a bit rusty.
I then slightly lost it and carried on cleaning the bike with WD40 - I couldn't believe how easily it removed all the winter muck (my bike hasn't been cleaned for months!!). The chrome came back brilliantly, lots of pitting removed from the forks... think I'll be trying that again!! Razz

Just one question though, will it do any harm? I also got a bit on my tyres but not on the tread - that won't age the tyre well or anything will it?

After doing all this I still washed the bike and shampoo/waxed it dry for further protection. Which was lucky coz it's all dirty again now after a very wet and windy ride into work this morning! Rolling Eyes

It can also very carefully remove smeg from japs eye and bell end if you can control the nozzle finely.

Also, i don't think you can fully remove pitting since once it occurs, it will continue occurring since it is a form of electro chemical corrosion, effectively you are creating sub surface cathodic and anodic sites for the metal and electrolyte (ionised water and all the dissolved crap) to react in. It will be back to rear its ugly head some time!

Just DONT use it on your brake pads, unless you're a complete idiot, in which case you're in contention for the darwin awards.

Also, don't use it on your O ring chains since instances have occurred where it has washed the grease from the O-rings causing the chain to fail.

It is a degreaser hence why it works well removing grease. I would NOT recommend it for heavy lubrication, in which case use oil based lubricants.

Use it on locks and door hinges over winter and you get a very smooth action - shove the thing into my petrol filler cap key every so often if it becomes stuck. If you've got them HISS honda keys, then they can bend easily so it'll be ideal to use them for that purpose.

What an interesting list.
Aside from some duplications, I found these interesting:

63. Keeps missile silo doors swinging freely (oh good)
141. Removes play-dough from hair
167. Spray on watch band to keep it from pulling out your arm hairs
530. Keeps clay from sticking to hoes Shocked Shocked

Same here.

I'm not sure if it's very good for human skin though.

Once in a while will be alright but if you keep doing it then it will start to crack your skin and stuff.
At work i use rubber gloves and pair of mechanics gloves.
You can get rubber gloves from loads of places, or if you cant be arsed looking there on ebay too. Thumbs Up

Brake cleaner doesnt last as long as WD-40 in my opinion and after watching those 4-5 vids of that guy cleaning his fireblade, i think WD-40 is more than capable of cleaning discs so long as you wash it off afterwards, or if you change pads every round on the karts it wouldnt matter anyway would it? As you'd just burn the wd-40 off wouldnt you?

Don't get conned by your local DIY shop either - look up a store that supplies the medical/care sector and you can buy them in larger quantities for cheaper. A quick google search turned up this website where you can get them 10x cheaper than at Homebase (or even less if you don't mind powdered ones!).

Anyway regarding the topic, surely a better question to ask would be "WD40 - Is there anything it can't do?" I quite like to use it on fairing panels for a nice shine. Thumbs Up

I accidently got some on my front brake pads and I had to drive to the carwash which is about 1km away. Very unpleasant experience as my back brake has no brake liquid in the hose...

Oddly enough, I work on a paintball site, and we used to use WD40 as a lubricant, but stopped when we realised it was making the rubber O rings deteriate very quickly. Not sure if its just that manufacturor or it`s the case with alot of rubber seals...

I dont think your supposed to mix oil or oil based solutions with rubber as it dries it out and they perrish. I'm not 100% certain but i dont trust oil when it comes to rubber parts.

I rate it as a general purpose bike cleaner/degreaser. I keep it away from the discs though (they don't require cleaning anyway).

I must be getting it mixed up with something else, my mistake.
Is it silicone that doesnt mix well with oil?
