Hearing your own voice recorded

Does anyone else cringe when they hear a recording of themselves?

I'm familar with the idea that it often doesn't sound like you, but I'd never given it much credit - that changed yesterday!

I had to give briefing to a camera before a planned cell-entry, giving a brief overview of the situation, the detainee, my name, my team's names, etc. The incident went smoothly, but while I was viewing the footage for anything of interest, I was struck by how fucking weird my voice and accent are! It was like watching a total stranger - I even tried talking at the same time as the video, and still couldn't see any similarities!

Everyone else who I've shown the video says that it sounds just like me, so I guess I'm just being weird - but I'm not happy at all!

Please tell me I'm not the only one who's found this?!

Yes I'm the same. My accent sounds a lot broader listening to it recorded.

I sounds terrible on recordings . I cringe to. I dare speak on answering machines or when filming.

Try recordings of yourself singing...

I tend to sound even more 'Yammy' on recordings or over the phone which is in no way a good thing.

Yup, agreed.

However, don't worry about it. Its what everyone you know has been listening to for as long as they've known you, it only seems weird to you.

I always thought I was erudite and clear when talking. However, listening to myself on tape; I sound like a posh scots east coast stoner.

I'm not happy either, but what can you do?

I also hate seeing photos of myself, but the same argument counts, others have been living with it (or not as the case may be) for years, so why worry about it.

defo sounds ultra weird - and i personally think i sound more nasal.

Watching yourself on film is worse I must say. Even if you are in the background doing nothing spectacular or eyecatching...u always think u look atrocious and out of place.

It's because normally you hear yourself mainly through bone conduction, but as said you sound normal to everyone else, so don't worry.

Yeah, when I recorded an answerphone message a while back, I discovered I have a slight lisp which I never noticed before.

Yeah, I get this a lot, I remember being absolutely gobsmacked in secondary school when I first heard just how deep my voice was. To me it sounds awkward and unpleasant, but as we can see here my voice actually sounds amazing when recorded. (admittedly in the recordings it's not that deep, but if I'm tired I sound like Barry White)

So yeah, basically, I'm not too worried because to be honest, if someone sounded like what I sound like to me, I would avoid talking to them purely because they had the worst voice in the world, and to the best of my knowledge, people don't ignore me on the grounds that I have an irritating voice, so it must just be me not hearing it right.

As for dimples - they are the devils work.

Every girl I know says they are cute, but it doesn't seem to do me much good - anyone would think that to be attractive you had to have an interesting personality too!

I'm so used to hearing my voice bounce back on Ventrilo it doesn't bother me anymore, but it did used to make me cringe a bit. Bit of a self-esteem issue I'm sure a trick cyclist would say.
