With Jamie 'Im a goodie 2 shoes' and the like harping on about the amount of sugar, fat and salt in our diet, the conditions of meat and live stock...

...who gives a fried KFC about it?

All it does is make me want all the bad things they are highlighting.

Depends what you want from 'getting in shape'. Some people want muscle etc but cant run for more than 5minutes. A nice balance sounds good. Doing weights wont get you 'fit',but it will get you looking fit. When your down come round my way and we can hit the gym baby, work up a sweat together etc, then take over the posing threads etc. Mr. Green Thumbs Up

There are an obscene amount of programs dedicated to it at the moment, like bloody reality shows and celebrity dancing like programs.

But there are a lot of people here who would never do anything without a large kick up the arse, so i guess the mentality is drill it into our brains.

Jamie Oliver is a c*nt
What a preachey sanctimonious bar steward
I flicked on to his programme for about 5 seconds by accident and saw him making fat people race on treadmills. And quickly flicked to anything else that was on Thumbs Up

I am sick to the back teeth of all the crap on tv lately saying what we cannot do anymore

I can't buy a cheap chicken in the shop any more-
So... Ok. You give me the extra tenner to get an organic, free range, treadmill raised, sunshine tanned, massaged chicken who listens to El Divo all day
I mean Neutral
I can't drink alcohol. I know this. Therefore I do it. It makes me feel nice Mr. Green Wink
I can't eat eat normal vegetables. I must eat HAPPY ones. IE ones that are reared on free range fields, in free range soil, so the veggies can go romping off on their own in happiness and sunshine with no chemicals.

I am just SICK of it all
God damned bluddy food and lifestyle nazis

I do agree with trying to eat better quality foods but they are putting Tesco in a bad light for trying to supply everything under one roof. This is by no means a bad thing.
Since I can remember my mum has bought chickens from the super market, they taste good, and I haven’t been ill from them.

Why doesn’t Jamie promote this idea?

Go to Tesco’s, get your household supplies, booze, cereal, milk, chips, pharmacy drugs, toiletries etc etc

Then on the way back from the big store, pop into your local bakery and butchers to get your meats and bread.

Job done, shut the fuck up, we know they’re there, but it’s the promotion of local goods like this that is lacking.

One thing I heard on the programme about chickens when I caught it on was ‘People are shopping at Tesco’s because of its convenience, everything is under one roof’ as if this was how we Brits end up unhealthy.
No shit Sherlock, and look what else they supply…..free parking, a crèche for children sometimes, electrical goods yada yada yada.
Park in the town centre to run into a butcher or baker and you could buy a nice healthy chicken for a few pounds and then have to pay the council for doing it.

I think people (JodieWodie!) kinda miss the point sometimes.

These programs are not telling you you CANNOT do something, they are merely 'educating' you on the consequences of picking a certain lifestyle.

You wanna eat shitty, fatty food, drink, smoke and do fuck all exercise? Go ahead, but you will die younger and have a lower quality of life.

Eating healthy doesn't have to be expensive.

I made broccoli and stilton soup last night, enough for six good portions. Total cost for that was under £4.

I actually found the Fowl Dinners programme really interesting, but then I prefer my own food and I prefer to use good ingredients. I've roasted a number of chickens in my life and the 'higher welfare' birds that Jamie was keen to promote not only cook better (i.e. they're not full of water so don't shrink) but they also taste better and seem to have a higher quantity of edible meat on them. That makes them, in my opinion, better value for money.

The last bird I roasted cost me £3.99, from that I have had:
- a meal for two of roast chicken, salad and fresh bread
- four portions of chicken curry (korma, I found some coconut milk \o/)
- four portions of chicken a sweetcorn soup (all that needed adding was a couple of potatoes)

Using a battery bird of the same weight there generally isn't enough edible meat left on it to make both the curry and soup (it's one or the other).

One of the supermarkets that was promoted was Waitrose who not only sell these higher welfare birds as their cheapest chicken but also source local produce. I would much rather pay 50p more for a chicken that has come from a farm down the road and hasn't been driven half way across the country regardless of the other benefits.

Used to do that and quite enjoyed the satisfaction of getting £30-40 worth of meat rather than shrink wrapped god knows what, but since I've moved there are no local butchers so Tesco.com it is.

Too true, but the abundance and methodology that they use does get a little grating to say the least. It does however get on ones moobs that people are shocked at the squalid conditions that livestock are kept, the fact that chicken fillet burgers actually come from a chicken or the fact that to have a whole chicken for less than a Big Mac Meal has consequences to the way its manufactured and sourced.

Maybe its me, but do people really live in caves or under rocks or are the nation becoming a bunch of thicky thick twats?

I've switched to free range chickens (always bought free range eggs - go figure Rolling Eyes ) if moneys tight I'll buy a freedom food one.

Bella is so right, the taste is completely yummier than standards.

Apart from the taste tho, it really hacks me off that the farmers are paid 3p per chicken from the supermarkets - WTF. And we think we're getting a bargain.

Also, it annoyed me massively that most of the people featured on these progs that said they wouldn't change the way they ate, as money was an issue, were fat. HELLO, lets try cutting down on a few pizzas, cakes and takeaways huh, then you might just have a little extra in your purse for some decent grub.

I think its just a case that people like Jamie, Hugh et al have kerb appeal for the masses. People are more likely to listen to them rather than some nobody dietician.

We all know we eat too much crap and as someone said further us, we aren't being forced to eat healthily, just being given a few facts to help us make better choices if we so want.

It's all a question of conscience really.

Can't be bothered to pay an extra few quid and/or do your shopping at different retailers?

Don't do it - but don't use the pictures on the TV as crotch with which to blame your shopping apathy on - I don't see anyone with a gun (or electric cattle prod) to your head forcing you to make a choice.

I've always shopped at local retailers purely to support 'the little man', the produce is fresh, tastes better and you don't have to make a special run into a City Centre to do it, most local retailers are literally on your doorstep in parade style shops - It ain't rocket science. Bugger Sainsbury's, Tesco's et al - As has been widely reported they couldn't give flying shite about animal welfare nor what they're serving to their customers.

Yup, we have done the same after watching the programme.

shellshock wrote:

My gut instinct is that this figure is misleading. I believe Jamie said that 'farmers make 3p per bird'. Now most people would think, perectly reasonably, that this means they are paid 3p per bird.

My gut instinct tells me that this is absolute bollocks. I have seen detailed financial records of hundreds of businesses, and that figure is just clearly wrong. Think of the food, initial purchase cost of the chick etc, they must be well over 3p per bird in total.

I would strongly suspect that the 3p per bird is the final net profit, after all costs, that the farmer makes. It may even be after tax. Margins are really small for suppliers of the big multiples, and net profit is generally in the region of 3-5%. Based on this broad calculation the sale price of each bird is between 60 pence and £1.25.

That is also consistent with a markup of about 150 - 200% by the supermarkets, which is pretty typical AFAIK. It should be noted that the supermarkets' own net profit on this would probably only be in the region of 5% also, especially on Chicken, as it is a major weapon in their price wars.

I am all for a healthy diet, i TRY to eat as much greens and fruit as possible, tho i'm not a big fan.

I go to the gym, purely because I want to lose weight - fitness I suppose is a "side-effect" for me. I find that i'm now officially in that Zone where u HAVE to go gym otherwise you balloon.

I personally think that programs such as Foul Dinners do open your eyes up and educate you on the things that you put in your mouth, how it gets there etc.
I'm all for healthy eating, but I can't give up fast food at all. I think its just the case of finding the balance.

I watch the the program and feel for the birds cooped up, necks all scrawny and unable to hold their weight up.......but.......put a bucket of KFC infront of me and that notion is out the window.
The smell alone is enough to make me "sin" all over again.

Yup, maybe not, but if you changed bodies with you as a 16 year old now the difference would be astonishing. Things take a long time to change, so you don't really notice them.

But whatever you want to do, its your choice.
