So public transport fares in London have gone up as much as 25% since the 1st January.

I thought he was supposed to be ENCOURAGING people to get out of their cars. If I was to get the tube to work now, it would cost me £4 a day.

That works out at £960 a year *just to get to work*.

Now let's see...

Car = £150
Insurance = £300

Petrol to get to work... let's say half a tank (it's a small tank) a week, and that includes trips out at lunchtime.
It's ten quid to half fill my car.

48 weeks @ £10 = £480

Taking my car to work for a year = £930.

Trip time in car - 10 mins door to door.
Trip time on tube - 20 mins plus 10 min walk this end (where you'll probably get mugged) and 20 min walk at home end.

What exactly is my motivation for getting the tube? Rolling Eyes

Middle Finger Ken Middle Finger

Yes, I'm bored. Well spotted.

You'll get to stand around with smelly people you don't know, don't like and hopefully won't mug you.

By your formula last year it cost me £1584 + £3250 + £800 = £5634 to get to work on the bike, at a mere 45 minutes each way in whatever weather happened to be around at the time. Zim tells me our new office (no hope of parking anything anywhere remotely near it, by the way) is a mere 3 hours away each day on the lovely trains, and a bargain at £1968 a year for the priviledge.

So like, ever thought, you've got it fucking easy? Wink

Well actually Kornel, if you were smart you would get a zones 1-4 oyster card which costs £112 If you times that by 12 you get £1344. Works out a 'lot' cheaper than riding the bike into work plus you get the added benefit of not ripping the guts out of your bike in the london traffic every day. Smile Still 3 hours a day commute does take the bloomin pi$$. Twisted Evil

One could always move house to be nearer work, thus shortening the journey. Wink

I worked it out for the car cos it made the point.
Obviously if I worked it out for the bike it'd be lots more expensive, but then if I had bought a bike *just* for commuting, I'd have bought something cheaper, both to buy and to run. But that wouldn't be nearly as much fun.

Where is this pit of hell your new office is in anyways?

Three hours to work??? No way in hell I would travel for three hours to get to my crappy job.

Ever thought of moving house? Or getting another job. Smile

Mate of mine's thinking about commuting from Bristol to London every day. Nutter.

However, it takes him an hour and a half to get from Hackney to Acton at the moment. That's an average speed of 6mph or something. Rolling Eyes He reckons he'd rather spend that hour and a half or so on the train with the paper and a can of Stella.

Oooh. I feel for you.

When I first moved to London I was staying over in Old Street/Moorgate. That side of town is just wrong.

How the hell did he work that one out then? Confused
I did from haringey (right next to hackney) to acton in about 45 minutes if I remember right.
And bendy, a day travel pass is £4.60 but you can get on the bus/train/tube with it. Still getting shafted though if you have to commute every day.
