so went for a run the other day for the first time since leaving college the first time at 17, so over a year ago...

got sick of being so gayly bored at home so ive taken to doing this at like 2am.

first attempt:

about half a mile down the road before i felt like i was going to have a heart attack!
made me think how fucking pathetic that is, i used to do 1.5 miles in 9 minutes! then again at 17 i was training to join the royal marines.
the next attempt was about 4 days later.

second attempt:

hellova improvement from the first one, i prolly had a cold or something first time round, i did a sort of circuit of country lanes at 1:15am, works out at around 1.8 miles.
only cocked up on an uphill bit past a farm, ill clock the course on the bike tomorrow.

next attempt im aiming to do it without slowing at all.
this is like learning to walk again Very Happy but i can see some drastic improvement already, so im definatly keeping it up.

this is gonna be a sort of progress report thing for me to look at, so blarrrr.

anyone got any suggestions for different types of excercises? i get bored as fuck doing circuit training/going to the gym. i like to do active things for excercise.
was thinking about getting a pedal bike too.

thing is...

ive got the running thing to sort my CV endurance, although i used to get shin splints from running, hence the cycling idea, but i want to do something about core and upper body strength, im going to need some serious work done there because ive been in a cast for 6 weeks, plus been lazy for a year.

i used to rep 110kg, so im thinking its a long road to doing that again.

fuck me thats a ramble, its 2:30am so thats my excuse...

cheers personal trainer queers xxx

Know exactly how ya feel!!! I've had 5months laying in bed after bustin my back. Everythings just wasted away and these last 2months in particular ive eaten more. Obv i noticed belly coming on, but i noticed no strength in arms so did some 4.5kg dumbells for 3mins as i would usually. Well my arms hurt liked hell for 3 or 4 days!!

Dont know about exact times and that, but i know that back in August, playing footy i could go the whole game feeling fine sprinting and then go and have a kick around with mates after and feel fine.

Same with running i'd go every coupla days, anyway i started off on the route i used to do about 2 weeks ago, was absolutely nackered after about 3mins. Walked abit, cut it short so did about 1.5miles. Went again next day did same and felt better for it.

Went swimming on Sunday, just doing breastroke, feel suprisingly better after that, was almost forced into by a mate, wouldnt usually go but i think i will now.

Anyway what ive decided on doing now is, 100 or so situps everynight, along with some pullups and pressups; and alternate swimming and running each day or so with maybe a day rest if needed, as able to start footy training again now.

Maybe start rowing? or just a rowing machine?

I'm so determined to get back to how i was, as i have 'had' to just stay laid resting. Its best not to overwork a run or something so muscles ache so much that you need to rest the next day, shorter runs daily i feel better for. Hate it when they tighten up the next day so dont feel like able to go for another run.

Get someone to go with, setting a time to go that you have to stick to so you do actually go and do the exercise and having someone for encouragement cant be bad.

Those powerball things are alright for arm strength too, theyre good for recovery aswell.

Am gonna watch this thread, gotta be some things i can benefit from!

i tend to like the feeling of overworking muscles, makes you feel like youve acheived something.

id do the situps thing too, but i just get bored... ive got the shittest attention span, ive got bored in cinemas a few times and just shagged the missus in the back row Wink

swimmings a goodun', but i cant get my cast wet, might just binbag it.

im gonna start doing these little wee hours escapades daily now getting further each time.

aim for the end of next week is to do the 1.8 mile course twice without stopping.

Yeh i like the feeling after a run its just when you're going out for a run the next day and they're still like it.

Didn't realise you still have the cast on. I get bored doing situps, what ive just started doing is have the laptop by side of bed and do them in 25's or so, I have a clock infront of me, and just set to do them against that, and have a quick chat with people back on msn after doing a set, then set to another set. As for pullups, got one of them £6.99 argos bars for my door, just do a few each time go in and out of my room, takes off the thought of thinking right i need to do so many of these later. Thinking about that though it'll be a while to doing those with your cast!!

I set goals like you say for running, as it can be boring, i try and remember where I've slowed down and if i've walked a bit where and how far then next time set out to do it and carry on for longer without them stops.

Just shag the missus more then your sorted haha.

ha, spose the missus is good excercise seeing as she just lies there like a corpse (shes real, honest) shes alive too.

just went for another circuit thing just now! got 3/4 of the way before stopping again... better than the 1/2 way round on the 2nd attempt. its odd! got further on 2nd wind than i did initially...

oh well, thats 3.6miles run today, same again and more tomorrow!

i feel right lazy now. Haven't gone swimming in a month, right going to start and get back into it now. Laughing

try and do some press ups and sit ups before i join all the others. Its so sad when you get people faster than you that are a good 2 or 3 years younger Sad

Went running in the summer / autumn when I started my job down here in Southampton. Really nice park, with running routes set out with distance markers (3.75 km track). Pretty awsome did it a couple of times .. then the clocks went back and so I get back from work and its pitch black! There's no streetlamps round it and hate running around busy streets Sad

Still play footy 3 times a week, badders twice a week and try go to the gym the other 2 days but I wanna go running!!! Can't wait for summer Razz

I usually cycle to work, didn't over xmas as I could get a lift from the parents and just sat around eating pies.

Was so knackered on my ride back about 2 weeks ago, nearly back to normal now though. Feel the burn. Thumbs Up

That's been my problem, and whilst there are facilities to go swimming I really dislike it. I get bored easily, there is always a fat old person breast stroking slowly up and down the pool and I hate smelling of chlorine.

Bring on the daylight hours when I can run around my area and actually see where I'm going (riverside path, and fields aren't ideal in the dark!)

I can't remember what the ratio is, but it's something like for every day you don't exercise you lose a level of fitness that took 2 (may be more) days to achieve.

Naw.

I can miss two or three days and go back and be better than before due to the rest. That said, my gym closed just before xmas there, just joined another one (David Loyd) after having three weeks off and my performance was on a par with a bin bag filled with yoghurt.

Running etc was just as it was (5km in 30 odd mins) but weights went right down the tubes. Used to bicep curl 20kg easily, tried it after that wee break and injured my left arm. (Fortunately it was my left arm... Wink )

This new gym has tennis, badminton and squash courts, expensive but worth it. (If only for the talent... Thumbs Up )

Dunno about that, but I do know that if you do no exercise for 12 weeks your body and muscle physiology will revert back to it's natural state, as if you'd never exercised.

Doesn't mean you're not able to rebuild it quickly, but it's depressingly surprising how quickly all your hard work can be lost.

exactly my logic too Very Happy

the day after i started this thread i physically could not walk! even now i cant stand on my toes without my calves feeling like they're tearing from my achilles tendon...

give it 2 more days and ill start again, 4 miles and my legs are fucked, how embarassing is that Very Happy still, carrying 15 stone that far would probably kill them either way

I learned that the last place you'll lose fat is from your gut - which is why i wanted to start exercising again in the first place. Confused

A little tool for you: https://www.gmap-pedometer.com/

I rarely run, 'bout once a month, but can still do sub 6 minute miles.

Take up a sport you like, or a martial art. Much more fun, gets you motivated aswell.

I was stopped as i was 'in the area' of a pub that had been broken into and the fruit machines robbed.

As my pockets weren't jingling with pound coins - they let me go. Cool

2:45 was the last one, it was a choice between sneaking out on the SRAD uninsured, or going for a run... i figured im insured on thursday, so running it is.

the time a few days before i had to stop for a bit at a gate halfway up the hill on the way back up, this time i made it to the top of the hill, which is an extra 100 meters or so.
go me and my pathetic acheivments Very Happy
