PostPosted: 17:36 - 15 Jan 2008    Post subject: Crosswind Reply with quote

Well there has been many a thread on crosswind but i searched and couldn't find any that was any help to me.

Basically, i ride a 50cc supermoto so it's probably A) The worse style bike to get because of the seating position and B) it's extremely light. How could i combat crosswind? i can't open the throttle and lean into it as there is no more power and i physically can't lean into it as the bike is getting slammed.

Earlier i felt when i was slowing down i was going to low-side the bike it was that strong. Also a brown trouser moment when i got hit by a big blast on a roundabout, que me slamming back brake and taking it easy rest of the way to college.

Thanks, Jack

Counter steer into it. When you get hit, turn your bars away from the direction your getting hit so if you get hit from the left, steer right.
This also applys for cornering, then you steer right at about 40mph for example, your bike will lean left. Understood?

Just grin and bear it.
One thing that helps is to keep clothing as tight as poss and not have stuff flapping around.

ah, the wonderful world of a 50. i remember it well, although it wasn't that long ago Laughing .
i remember i had more of a headwind problem, im going about 45mph round a corner, then wam! head wind then down to 25/30mph Confused . not good.
then i'd be stuck between gears trying to get going Sad .
best thing to do is bear with it, then get a 125 or something(do your test) when your 17 dude Thumbs Up .
i went straight in for te test, now having so much more fun.
bear with it dude Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Sadly there is absolutley no substitute for power and weight in this case. Even on a 400kg Goldwing I have been knocked across a lane by a sudden gust of wind.

It worries me because my daughter who is 16 in April wants a 50cc motorcycle.

I would love to get the asshole who decided on the speed limitations on 50cc bikes and scooters to ride one around for a few days because he would suddenly realise what a total twat he was.

The only answer is age, 17 and a 125 Thumbs Up

Fairings do have their disadvantages don't they? Smile

The Pan is a bugger when going down the A180 in a crosswind (very open in places so you catch it full bore).

If you're leaning into a wind remember that the support its giving you will disappear when you go under road bridges etc.

probably one of the most scariest things as a scooter rider on the ol'windy A road which takes me into London...!

Will be upgrading to a CBR 125 soon-ish... dont know if it will be any better? Confused

just hoping the added 20kg (from scooter to CBR) and a few kg chain lock will help! but obviously the fairings from the CBR isnt Thumbs Down

A constant crosswind's not too bad. Its the gusts that are a pain.

The CBR isn't too bad in crosswinds. get a bit hairy though when your doing 60 round a gentle bend, with open fields either side, and the road is wet, and you get hit by a gust....

You gotta lean into it, but it makes you feel like the bike is gonna lowside at that lean angle...

The tyres, whilst sufficient for the biks weight + speed, and not big enough or grippy enough to give you lots of confidence. My rear is getting a bit low on tread, so might get a set of BT39's when they need changing.

Its an observation thing , and you should precounter steer to avoid it, ie overtaking a big high sided lorry? , prep for the windblast after you pass it, a road cut into a hill , watch out for when it ends.

Experienced it on the M5 during last summer pretty bad. Even found going slower didn't seem to make it any better. Eventually had to take back roads which were less exposed.

One of the worst things I've experienced on a bike Sad

why would going slower help? , if anything I'd have thought you'd go faster and thus be able to countersteer less but keep it in a straight line.

Because when its really gusty its very scary being blown across two carriageways at high speed.
