Just been trying to get hold of a plain old 60watt bayonet fitting spotlight bulb. Can I find one? Can I buggery. The local co-op has 2 bulbs in stock. two!. whats that all about? two lousy energy efficient bulbs in the whole lousy shop. Went to aldi in Oldham, they have a few boxes of bulbs, several different types, but the only spotlights they have are screw in ones. Looks like i'm going to have to traipse all the way to the B and sodding Q superstore 5 miles away. All for a lousy bulb. Evil or Very Mad

Heard something today about normal bulbs being made illegal/phased out or something along those lines. Apparently if you take your normal bulbs to places like B&Q they'll knock some money off energy saving ones for you.

Yeah, but I know that you wont actually get that happen, head office said that we can offer discount at discretion of the store manager at the time, they want to be the best budget/profit branch, so it wont happen.

Its a govt initiative to make things energy efficient, all bulbs sold have to conform or something. I dont really remember much, I was hungover at the morning meeting before they were introduced, but I do remember them saying theres mercury which everyone was having a hissyfit about.

If you break a bulb, open all windows and doors, use some gloves, n chuck it in a bin. Sorry, suitable waste disposal area.

I think its the only normal bulb we have in the house. all the others are energy efficient ones but we couldn't find a suitable bulb to replace a spotlight. I guess i'll just have to find a new light fitting.
I dont want owt modern looking coz the room has a very olde worlde feel to it.

From Sept 2007 :-

Quote:
Most major retailers will no longer stock traditional lightbulbs by 2011, the environment secretary, Hilary Benn, told the Labour party conference in Bournemouth today.
But environmental campaigners quickly pointed out that the initiative is voluntary, and incandescent bulbs will still be available from smaller retailers and from online shops.

Several major retailers, including Asda, B&Q, Homebase, IKEA, John Lewis, Marks and Spencer, Morrison's, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose, have agreed to stop restocking traditional 150-watt bulbs from next January.

Quote:
One hundred-watt bulbs will be phased out in 2009 and 40w bulbs the following year. The announcement follows the more stringent pledges made by the governments of Brazil, Venezuela and Australia.

I'm wondering how the fluorescent bulbs will handle being on a dimmer - I thought they didn't like it.

There are special low flourescent bulbs designed for use on dimmers.

Although no doubt getting one in a suitable fitting will be a nightmare.

All the best

I wonder if you consider the entire product life cycle of the energy efficient bulbs what if any net saving there actually is.

Since they are more complicated than ordinary bulbs and contain more bits like mercury and need extruding and bending of glass.

Bit like solar panels and or wind farms , better off burning the coal to make electricity rather than building either. Though I do quite like the Heliostat + towers you find in California

Probably depends on how they are used. Their life expectancy drops dramatically when switched on and off for short periods of time.

All the best

Eey, seems shaggy's internet skills can teach me to do my job better than a prick who actually enjoys wearing orange and shouting about profits!
