Are you actually being serious? Neutral

Clearly you've never rode a manual bike before.

Personal preference is geared,

As for which is better, its also a personal choice, some people like the hassle free control of automatics.

Although most are scooters, there are a few new models slowly emerging such as the likes of the honda DN01 and Aprillia Mana 850, which mix a more big bike style with automatic controls. However these two also have manual push button gears as well so you have a bit of choice to ride it like a big scooter or have abit more refinement in the controls.

If i ever end up not being able to gear shift with my left leg, i'd be more than happy to jump on an automatic.

different things are better in different situations.

Aswell as geared or auto, on dirt bikes you have gears, but you dont need to use the clutch to change.

Each of these 3 are good for different situations.

On my scooter, the continuously variable transmission, makes stop start stuff in traffic a doddle.

On my dirt bike, i can keep a good grip on the bars when offroad without having to work the clutch, and in traffic its nice and easy just to use the gear lever not the clutch.

On my sports 600, I need gears, to make the best use of the engine. Use whichever bit of the rev range is best for the situation. High revs for hard acceleration, and low revs for cruising.

Someone may say this is obvious, but then again someone else may completely disagree.

For hooning around geared but for a commute it's going to be a lot faster on a scooter. Stop start traffic on a twist and go is brilliant.
Saying that though, I've never ridden a manual so i'm biased Embarassed
I do plan on keeping my scooter after I've passed my test just because it's really easy to ride.

A little internet digging:

A manual geared transmission is the pinnacle of practicality. They're cheap, lightweight, and the most efficient mainstream offering you can buy. An off the shelf manual transmission is about 97% efficient.

An automatic geared transmission is the pinnacle of laziness. They're big, heavy, expensive and inefficient. But damnit, you don't have to shift! I didn't find any average efficiency number for an off the shelf automatic, but you lose about 5% of your gross fuel economy in one.

An automatic ungeared transmission, like a CVT or hydrostatic, offers efficiency on par with manual transmissions without the bloating of a conventional geared automatic. These are the future IMO. They've been around for years and are proven in earth moving equipment, tractors, mowers, etc. New technology in belts and hydraulic fluids let them handle high speeds.

When driving, I prefer the automatic transmission. On the bike, twist and go is a no no.

Just an FYI to those that don't know;

The automatic gearbox in a scooter is a CVT. (Continuously variable Transmission).

it's why the engine tone doesn't change; The thingies (technical eh?) that hold the dive belt at either end change size to increase your speed...

So it's the gearing that is constantly changing, not the engines rpm.

Gears are more fun and give you more control over how your power is delivered. I can do 30mph at 7krpm an have a bit of kick there, or at 4~5krpm and it'll be really smooth. (good for when it's slippy out).

i suggest you read this

I'd go for semi-auto button shift, perfect for drag racing Smile

I actually prefer a geared bike to commute. I find the journey more interesting as you have to slip the clutch alot (on the RS especially) do wizadry with the gears etc.

When on a twist and go I feel the need to lock the rear wheel around each corner and get both wheels off the ground at speed humps.
Get yourself a geared bike (even a hired one) as you have passed your test. You will never go back...

I think Colin is referring to an auto-clutch. Forgive me if im wrong, but don't they have a centrifugal mechanism that prevents the engine stalling if you drop the bike, or get stuck?

I seem to remember Colin asking about them before he bought his dirt bike.
