Hi, I was at a Shell petrol station today and i was told by the cashier that the next time i was at the station i was not to enter the shop with the helmet on, I didn't bother talking back to her instead i was wondering if Shell had a policy on helmet removal, does anyone know if they do or not? if not then i intend to write a letter.

Should have had a hunt around for signs.

I know they don't let you fill your bike whilst you're sitting on it anymore. At least they never used to, they had big posters up. I just stand there until they turn the pump on. Laughing

Sounds like they are just on a power trip to me.

Hmm I use to always take my helmet off. But in winter with having my neck warmer on I never bother, to much hassle sorting it out when I put it back on.

Not been asked to take it off, and I have recently been filling my bike up while sat on it... can squeeze a bit more fuel in Smile

I normally get off the bike, take one glove off, look at the cashier, then once its turned on, get back on fill up, then walk in and pay. Done.

Noone around here complains at all, first time I was taking my lid off as I got to the till to buy some fags anyway guy said don't bother, which I though was pretty good.

If you have already filled up and then they say they wont let you in the shop with the lid on - fine, treat the petrol as a gift.

Pretty sure this is not a Shell policy as there would be stickers on the door and pumps.

It may well be their policy, but like most shops it only happens when the staff can be arsed. Apparantly Tesco have the same policy according to some kid who works at the big one in Reading who told me I had to remove my lid before he would serve me. Considering I already had what I wanted I didn't see much point in complying Laughing

I mean seriously what is the point in making bikers remove their helmets?

Ive have been asked to remove my helmet at one Shell (Main station leaving Portsmouth) and one Texico. Both non English people, who wouldnt answer my questions why.

Ive been in one Sainsburys in Portslade, and she said ' Next time, can you please remove you helmet befor filling up'

ive been in since and no problem. If they have a problem, then maybe they should tell you before filling up.

I usually use the same petrol station local to me, its a Shell and i know the people in there. I never take my helmet off whilst filling up at any station, but usually take it off before i enter, unless its incredibly shit weather in which case I would expect the cashier to understand the reason behind not removing my helmet.

Ive had 2 situations recently (Last summer) in petrol stations, once at Tescos when i didnt take my helmet off to pay. I had a £5 note in my hand to pay for that amount of petrol, the daft women kept asking me to remove my helmet and I said I have the money in my hand and wish to pay. After a 2 minute argument I chucked the fiver on the desk and muttered "Idiot". And walked out.

What the fuck can she do? I want to pay for my petrol and she denied that. In heinsight I shouldnt have given her the fiver at all.

Second incident was about 6 months ago at a Shell garage in Norwich. I was waiting at the pump, off my bike with helmet on. I waited for about 5 minutes, and thought the guy hadnt seen me or something. To my ssuprise(note sarcasm) he was Indian, and motion for me to remove my helmet. I motioned a 1 finger salute and left the station. Power hungry idiots.

I think the idea behind it is, if you ride off without paying they can't see what your face looks like etc.

Just an idea though?

If they won't authorise the pump, just go someplace else. If you already have the fuel, just say no.

A the shell garage will most likely be a franchise they can pretty much do what they want.
Could be they have had a problem with a biker riding off, or a robbery in the shop. So now want to see all faces on camera.
Was it a new person serving ?

Personally i always take lid off before entering shop, even though i wear specs and its a bit of a pain. But its nice to get lid off for a min or so and some fresh air. Also its a bit of common courtesy.

I don't know where you guys live, but down here in London Town and Surrey, we fill up while sitting on the bikes with our lids on, then we ride the bike off the pumps to a more convenient place away from the spilt diesel and pay, still with the lid on. Thumbs Up

ive never removed my lid in a petrol station never been asked. I guess it just depends on the person serving you and what kind of day theyve had.

I've only ever been asked to remove my helmet in banks.

The Shell garage I use has Pay At Pump which is much quicker than queuing in the shop.

If they asked me I'd say no, although I use pay and pump at my local Shell so it's never usually a problem.

I've only ever been asked to when buying baccy. They said they wanted to see my face for ID, and that technically I should taken it off anyway. When leaving the shop I looked on the door and there was a small notice kindly requesting bikers to remove helmets.

I haven't taken it off since, in that station or any others.

I mostly take my helmet off when i go inside to pay, they always have a shocked face on them like i'm about to rob the place if i don't lol.

Some petrol stations i'v used have signs asking for helmets, caps, hoods to be removed when entering anyway, it's just a crime prevention thing.

Although i don't use these garages any more, can't be arsed with all that.
