Hello,
basically, im looking at investing in a pipe. I have never smoked a pipe before although i have/do smoke cig's and cigars- but i think pipes look brilliant- so a want one.
I need advice on what pipe to go for- as a starter pipe, something cheap in case i dont like it. Also what kind of tobacco do i go for. Ready rubbed yes, but do i get english blends or aromatic?
If its any help i usually smoke Marlboro Lights- an indication maybe of my taste preference? I dont want any silly tasting ones like mint or coffee, unless they come highly recommended. Your advice please.

Smoking a pipe is a bit different.

As with a cigar, you arent meant to breathe it in, you hold the smoke in your mouth and sort of taste it.

i've tried this with a cigar and cant do it.

I quite like the idea of using a pipe too, from the days when men relaxed after killing the evil hun.

Despite the flak you're copping, I really liked this thread.

I went on those links and had a look at the pipes, and it reminded me of my grand-dad - a right little nostalgia trip

Some of those pipes are lovely, and that amphora one you are buying ... blimey, they're a bit snazzy.

Also, on that "notsoboringlife" link there was an article about shark-fishing in surf, which was also quite interesting.

Thumbs Up

I bet you can, Col.
You've just got to practice.
After a while, you get the hang of it.
Its a bit like spitting/swallowing.

A guy I go shooting with smokes a pipe, and he seems to really enjoy himself when he pulls his pipe out and has a quick few poofs with his pipe.

Although I'd never try it (haven't ever tried a cig either), it does look rather sociable

I hate the smell of pipe smoke, but each to their own.
My Dad smokes a pipe, he prefers a proper briar (<sp), i bought him a right nice ceramic pipe one christmas and he used it once. Apparently wooden ones are better as they keep the flavour. Just remember that they go out so you have to tap the ash out, tamp them down and re-light them all the time, gives you a right thick layer of asbestos type skin on the thumb.

On the tobacco front, the old man uses Condor ready rubbed he used to use St Bruno but i dont think they make it any more.

Have fun.

Lee.

Thats exactly what i mean. It looks relaxing and sociable (well all smoking is unsociable nowadays but nevermind). Think it would be brilliant to just trundle along in my 4x4, smoking ma pipe and wearing a tweed hat lol.

Nice post Helkat! Yeah just a bit of flack, but so what? lol. Yeah the pipe is rather snazzy but i like. I havent decided for definite on it. But im very tempted.

One thing that is slightly putting me off is the fact that it seems quite alot of effort. But i suppose once you get used to it, its just like rolling a fag?

I don't smoke, never have or ever will.

However, if I did then I can see where you're coming from.

A cigarette is just that, a cancer stick sold to underage single mums and wanabee gangstas. No dissing intentional. Whereas a huge fat, the size of a dildo cigar has a certain appeal and status attached to it. Not only the time needed to smoke the damn thing, but the methodology and ethos behind such an aroma polluter. A pipe may be thought of in the same league as this. It takes a certain type of person to smoke one, a certain type of person to tap the shag out of it and to puff contently on it in the corner of a pub as its lit with a match, a certain type of person that doesn't mind smelling like a tramp and having a beard thats stained yellow.

Hell man I'm with ya!

The ones that JC and the Top Gear lot used were quite cool looking.
