It'd be nice to get a bike for my son to try and ride he's 4 and 3 1/2 foot tall. Although he hasn't got the foggiest idea about pedals, he has had a starter bike (no pedals) and he displays excellent balance and quite good steering.

I was thinking of a cheap minimoto but they appear to have gone just as quick as they came onto the internet scene. There are 2 tracks near us that allow minimotos so not on the open road or on the streets. The idea of having to repair cracked fairings if he doesn't learn to stay rubber side down is a little disconcerting and maybe not the most natural of riding positions to learn to turn.?

Therefore I was thinking maybe an off roader but have absolutely no idea on mini bikes or small scramblers.

Any ideas?

Could you not fit some crash bungs to it? Or get one without the fairing? They are fairly quick mind, prob top speed of about 25mph so might be a bit much for a 4 yr old?

Pit bikes would be too big and franky, I'm sure his son has more taste than to be seen on something as boring as a GSXR Wink.

You don't need to run minimotos with fairings.
When I first started running minimotos at tracks I could easily crash ten times in a night and the minimoto generally wouldn't show much ill effects from it.

Do do some research and find a minimoto that will run for more than five minutes after you bought it. Some of the cheap ones are ok, some aren't.

Could be worth looking at fitting some kind of restricter too, initially.

The only reason why I mentioned about the crashed fairings are that I see an off roader being a lot more suitable for learning and is almost made to be dropped, crashed, thrashed and beaten.

The PW50 looks ok

I'd definitely say minimotos are the way to go for him, the bottom fairing is only attached with a few bolts and can easily can be removed. The minimoto scene is far from dead by the way, it's just the chavs have got bored of riding them on the road. If you're interested I'm actually selling my little minimoto if I get the right money for it & it's actually reliable unlike loads of the ones I've seen that are similar, PM me if you're interested. Wink

For more help try here: www.minimotoclub.co.uk ignore the little brats on the site and try and get solid advice from some of the other adults. Thumbs Up

Anyway, any chance to photo-whore must be taken... Mr. Green

I guess an alternative could be a small dirtbike (have one of those for sale too lol) however they tend to be a little harder to find somewhere legal to ride, especially if your son has no previous experience...

Very shiny!

The mini would be easier to get in and out of the car. The swingometer is going both ways.

It can't be that hard to learn to ride at an early age can it? As long as its automatic with no clutch to worry about then its just the brakes????

If only you could see him now. He's spinning in circles making himself dizzy playing with his Hotwheels cars.

You could always start him off on a Quadard I suppose, and get him used to the speed first because the stock minimotos will hit 30mph and for a 4 year old that's a lot of speed, maybe start him off with a Quadard with a throttle restriction and then slowly derestrict the throttle bit by bit as he becomes more confident and then put him on two wheels as he gets used to the speed (as quadards can get to about 30mph too). Quadards are relatively cheap too, the only problem would be finding somewhere to ride it as obviously he's going to need some kind of open grounds to practice using it on...

4 is not to young to start riding, kids are racing on geared 60cc motocross bikes by that age in nz.
start them as early as possible, then it will always be second nature to them,
i was so young that i can't even remember learning to ride.
the pw50 was a great little bike, and got handed down right through my family, with out any real troubles..
leave the plastic fantastic bikes untill after they have crashed lots,
and who really wants to ride a bike with no suspension.

and 4 wheeler are for girls or farmers!!
