Is it just me but having a car with Auto braking and collision warning on isn’t a safety feature for other road users it's an excuse to let incompetent and dangerous drivers onto the roads? Let’s face it if the car is supposed to stop you hitting things they will be less likely to do the obvious and look for other cars and bikes. Also if the device isn’t fitted to the rear/sides as well what stops them reversing out of there drive without looking into a biker or car and pleading ignorance?

Just my rant for the day against dangerous drivers.

I'd be happy with no ABS, no power steering, no airbags and no electric windows. I do like my AC though.

Personally if it makes cars safer then I'm all for it.

You'd have probably said the same no doubt about ABS? And Radar guided cruise control?

Drivers aides providing a false sense of security taking skill and thinking from the driver themselves ultimately leading to just sitting there and pressing the pedal. Ergo, I'd much prefer to have a car without said safety devices.

Something like that anyways?

Stuff like ABS, stability control, tractional control etc is a safety net rather than a tool to drive quicker than you're able to. I mean jesus the amount of cars I go in where the dash is constantly lit up like a christmas tree Shocked They flatter the drivers and having something like auto collision and braking warning will surely make people even more nonchalant about driving?

Biker and cager here

You seem to forget that not all people that scrape through a driving test are advanced motorists or self rightous 'I ride a bike, own the road, have more skill than anyone else etc' professional drivers. You have to remember that ANY idiot can pass a driving test eventually and that same idiot may need to hammer the brakes some time whilst behind you.

To say things like 'Id rather not have ABS' is ridiculous, Id rather the old granny behind me had ABS and the rest as it gives everyone a better chance. Your AVERAGE driver wont be able to stop the car quicker in the wet than the ABS can and that has to make the road safer. Knowing that the car wont lock the wheels when the 'gifted' boy racer is showing off to his mates or is so over confident he doesnt realise what a dick head he is and comes to within 6 inches of my rear bumper is far better than watching someone sliding down the road all four wheels locked in a blind panic heading towards some other poor soul.

If the fact that manufacturers are trying to make cars safer offends you then dont use the features, pull the fuse for whatvere you dont want or even better dont buy them. I bet they had the same arguments over seat belts, so fuck it dont even wear one of them either after all if your so clever you can just hold on to the steering wheel.

God!! Rolling Eyes

Cager... Razz Laughing Karma

Evidence indicates that safer vehicles can have a little bit of a negative effect on overall road safety. By providing a coccoon/gladiator invincibility.
Years ago cars were slower and heavier to control, shitty brakes, pish tyres and bad road surfaces and mechanically shite.

Now we are faced with immoral things such as: ABS, Electronic Traction Control, Anti-collision systems, active suspension, anti skid surfaces, power steering, Sat-Nav, hi-performance tyres etc.

It's not a matter of switching it all off.
The most fundamental and most common factor in accidents is driver error.
People are dicks. Vehicles do as commanded.

Training is the answer. Make road safety a habit not a requirement.

BTW, I am a good driver/rider/lover (and I can cook too).

Depends on how you define good though doesn't it. Is good, driving everywhere at bang on or below the speed limit for 60years of your life and never hitting a single thing. Or driving mostly faster than the speed limit, never holding anyone up, have one major smash in a 60yr driving career. Or driving pretty much the same as the majority, having a few minor bumps, but learning from each. Which of those qualifies as being a "good driver"?

Safety features aren't necessarily all good, they usually evolve into systems that finally work reliabily and get incorporated into most new cars, ie ABS, Traction Control, Airbags, seatbelts, Impact bars etc. You'll get new features that impede driving, and radar activated braking for example could well be one of them, but it'll no doubt get improved, modified and will eventually be considered a useful safety feature. True, you can drive a car without ABS and TCS just as safely as one with, but for the average driver that uses the car as a tool and isn't really bothered about how exactly evertyhing works is grateful for brakes that stop you skidding, and wheels that stop themselves from spinning.

This is dangerous, someone buys this car they will assume they will not need to worry about hitting stuff ignoring how stable this system is or any gliches it may have, the car still has braking distance. People will not take this into account.

Jeremy Clarkson once visited india , the drum brake was king , disc brakes would be suicidal as being able to stop faster = rear ended, if this computer controlled gizmo = your car brakes faster won't it necessarily break the braking tables of thought time + braking time = distance to stop?.

Also the volvo advert is strange, I'm sure flesh wasn't detected by radar , and thus makes you wonder what'd happen with other low radar sig materials like carbon fibre.

I caught the advert for that new Volvo system on the weekend.

I'm unsure as to how it works, but if what I saw was correct then if you are the average myopic, innatentive car driver who instead of watching the road ahead, will be concentrating on much more important things like scenery/kids in car/radio, and not slowing for blind bends and the system detects an obstacle in front you, you will hear an audible alarm.

*Beep*

Cue much slamming on of brakes and carnage for all behind.

Wonderful, a system that shouts at shitty drivers, probably causing a panic reaction.

Laughing

You'll be okay though in your Volvo crash-cage, resplendant with airbags for every part of your anatomy. In fact, whilst you are spinning through the air after being rammed by an arctic, you can thank the Lord for your new 'safety feature' and mutter to yourself how all vehicles should be fitted with them.

Volvo - for self righteous fucktard drivers the world over.

The notion is a good one. It could save an otherwise good driver during a momentary lapse of reason. It should compliment a driver not take over from him.

However, I must admit that the amount of factors required for a computer system to decide when to hit the brakes and remove the control from the driver must be astronomical and when companies like Microsoft cannot even get an operating system to function correctly which leaves me wondering how many fatalities the new system will cause before they can iron out all of the bugs.

Lets face it, no matter how much testing they have done, there will be variables they have missed, that only real life situations will expose, and these will lead to the system failing. These systems take years and years to perfect.

Personally I'd wait a few years before jumping onto this one particular bandwagon.

Ooohh does that mean we can hoon it round a corner and not lowside? Mr. Green

Joking of course.

It sounds like a really useful idea, if genuine. Especially with hazards like Diesel and White Lines.

Hi

Giving a driver less to do will reduce attention, so in that way such a system is likely to cause other problems.

On the other hand there are some on the road who have such a nominal amount of attention on the road that it could only help them.

All the best

Keith
