Hi

We have a DVD based MP3 player in one of the cars (JVC KD-DV4202). This does have an output for a external screen but we don't use that. What it does do which we like is take a DVD full of MP3s of music and just play them. While there are CD equivalents they hold only ~1/5th the number of tracks, and the DVD based ones we can find now all have a built in large screen which we don't really want (let alone want to pay and extra £100 for).

There are one or 2 places still listing old stock of these players (but not many places), but we cannot find any alternatives.

Anyone seen anything similar recently that they would recommend?

All the best

Keith

Hi

Nice thing about this is I can just lob stuff onto DVD, or a load of DVDs. No need to have wires draped around the car to an MP3 player, or USB sticks poking out.

If there are some that will take a CD (for those odd times when I buy a CD) but have a USB (or equivalent slot) which allows MP3s to be uploaded for use (rather than just playing from an external device) then I could be interested.

All the best

Keith

Slightly newer model?

Depends on your budget really. Most of the better units have the usb/ipod/aux inputs on the rear of the unit, so you just loop the usb etc cable around the back into your glovebox to store the device tidily in there.

So copy mp3's into a usb pen on your computer, plug pen into usb cable inside glovebox, job done.

Be quite careful with the head units that support USB hard disks, the drives power consumption is an issue, the directory structure of the files can also affect performance greatly.

I know this isn't strictly what you're looking for, but it covers two out of three bases - its wireless and it can play mp3s

In-Car 12v MP3 FM Modulator
Features:
- Compatible with MP3 players, CD players, DVD players and laptops
- 14 LED preset indicators for FM frequencies
- Standard USB port
- Play, pause, volume and track selection controls
- 3.5mm stereo input

Basically you plug it into the cigarette lighter socket and tune it to a frequency on the car radio. You plug in a USB pen full of mp3s and away you go. I use one and its very handy - no more wasting cds Thumbs Up

SVP are selling them for a tenner + p&p

I've got one of these:https://www.dansdata.com/dah220.htm

It takes Multi media cards, and you can get up to 4gb mmc's It also has 1gb of onboard space.

This means it holds 5gb of MP3's. It is supposed to have a feature where fast forwarding the tape deck skips tracks, but I've never got it to work on mine. It could be because my car tape deck doesn't have the right rollers to activate the roller in the unit.

Hence I was glad when I found a subaru with an OE CD/tape player!

Its not quite as high quality as a CD, but its better quality than an actual tape. The batteries last about 6hrs, and it comes with two rechargeable batteries. They take about an hour or so to recharge.

And it means you can keep a less nickable tape deck in your car rather than a tarty MP3/CD/DVD player.

Only downside is, I have no idea if they are still for sale.

Interesting. Thanks. Quite happy with the DVD capacity and it is easy to use being a single dashboard unit. Looks like it still has a volume control knob rather than piddly little slow to react buttons which is a plus point.

You haven't seen the glove box. It is rammed full!

Cigerette lighter is pretty much always in use, so a bit stuck there and it would also be prone to being knocked out. Prefer not to use the tape replacement things (although we have one floating around that goes into the headphone socket of a CD player / mp3 player).

All the best

Mains one plugged in an inverter with a modulator to the car radio. Works perfectly which is suprising.

Aldi have been selling Car stereos with CD drive, USB slot and I think SD Card slots too, so you can play MP3s off all formats. If you get one with an SD Card slots, 2Gb SD cards are only a few quid these days so nearly as convenient as DVDs, and are at least re-writeable so you don't have to keep burning new ones.

I had a dual DIN TFT touchscreen unit in my V70 with a DVD drive which played MP3s off the DVD and an SD card slot, but tbh I used the SD card slot as it was easier to just pop it out and load up on the computer to modify the playlist.

I still have an old Panasonic CD/MP3 unit with analogue voume dials etc, nice unit, cost about £100 4.5years ago, worth nothing now so I keep it as a spare. Still using the standard GM CD player in the Pontiac as replacing it is gonna require yet more fancy fascia adaptors, and I just can't be bothered again, 20 tracks per CD will do for now.
