When I got my KLR back off my mum she'd put a gert-big white tob box on it... which I generally took the piss of... until I rode it and realised it was actually usefull!
Okay, you may not look as 'cool' but:
You can actually do a reasonable amount amount of shopping.
You don't get back ache on long journeys... you may not look as good as your mate with aback pack, but you defiantley feel much better and can go a fair bit further.
You're going past car drivers anyway... so does it really matter if you look good.
You look like a courier (well people reckon I did)... this may or may not be a good thing, but people don't tend to get in the way of bike couriers too much.

Oh yeah, my flate mate's tank bag had less than half the capacity of my KLR's topb box. I have actually acquired some panniers for weekends away on my zx6, which coincedentally are about the right colour and size (I found them in mums loft).

Mine was a dodgy white 15 year old fiber glass jobby... which had to be bungied shut! It jumped off when I went a *little* to fast over a speed bump on the way to work... tore the bits around the screws off so I had to make some wooden 'washers' to hold it on.

Never been a fan of top boxes- why go for one of them, why not just get soft throw-over panniers cos they do the job and still look good?

Also are top boxes really secure enough to leave a helmet in? If so then it may be worth it. My bikes got a tank thats sort of hollowed out underneath so that theres storage space when you flip it up. I was led to believe I could fit a full-face lid in there but you'd be lucky to get little 'piss-pot harley-type' helmet in. Should be good enough to fit a lock though.

exhausts often get in the way of panniers... and they do make it a bit wider... I'm sure I knocked a coupla mirrors filtering on the M25 with panniers on my zx. Though I only had the topbox because it was on when I got it back from my mum... I wouldn't go out of my way to put one on.

Ah but you're going out of your way to make youself look stupid with the furry ears rather than for the sake or practicality... it's like people that buy Jesters hats at festivals... if you were the only person, fair enough but when everybody has them it's just looks crap (in a cheesy sort of way).

Oh yeah... nothing wrong with couriers per sae... but nowing a couple of ex couriers I would expect they generally attract police attention.

From what I know, couriers ain't got the best reputation for being the best riders on the planet.

But one good thing is they're never late for anywhere, wherever water will get, they'll get.......

depends what you mean by 'best riders'...

There's no way I'd want to try and keep up with a courier through a city centre... maybe not the safest, but defiantley the fastest as far as urban riding goes.

dont top boxes ruin the bike aero dynamics???

their not bad for touring but i prefer sticking a bag on my shoulders and cargo netting a bag on the rear seat!
