Whats with the fascination about having a million mirrors attached to their vespas?

Fashion?
Surely not to see better?
A death wish that in the event of a crash they can content with tarmac and glass?

Any insights? I cant work it out.

Probably a minority to be honest. Most of the custom Lambrettas I've seen have had SERIOUS engine work done on them in a mildly chopped and raked frame. You don't see too much of the lights and mirrors carry on out there.

In other words, the primary aim was to make them fast, secondary aim was to make them look good. Something I think we can all understand.

Of course, with motorcycles and scooters, as with anything, there's always someone who misses the point:

Lambretta owners club: "I don't understand these bikers. Why would they6 want toride such a big heavy bike with lights all over it?"

Odd, all the old skool mods in this area (the ones that would have been alive when the style was really in its swing) all have stupid amounts of mirrors on their bikes.

my dad had his mate at the time make him up a rack and mirror set for his lambretta during the mod period. after he fit it he went out for a ride but unfortunatly they were so heavy and the bike so rotten he went over a pothole and most of the front section of the bike got ripped off! i think theres a picture at home somewhere but im at uni now so i cant show Crying or Very sad

but answering the question it was just the crappy fasion at the time a bit like rim tape and neons nowadays, o and those vil replacement footpegs. my dads lambretta also had a 7ft ariel with a foxtail on top fitted.

Yeah just like the mods here, but all the ones in my area are a odd bunch of people. Dont talk, always look scruffy, like to do things on their bike but have no idea what theyre doing. Had one trying to wire an alarm to his vespa, and didnt hook it up to any power - apparantly he felt attaching it to the indicators would provide it with the power.

Ok history 101.....

back when i was a boy, the wee town in scotland where i grew up had mods n bikers...the mods hung out at the amusement arcade, wore suits, herringbone style, harrington jackets, skinny ties....MOD was a fashion statement, and they were into the who, and the jam...it was a look, and the scooters with the mirrors and big wavy areials with fox tails was all part of that....along with fishtail parkas....etc
And we as bikers had running battles with them...

What "Stinky boy" is reffering to are Scooter lads (n lasses)
The scooter lads were bikers really that just preffered tiny wheels n as was said rode (and alot still do ride) well trick little beasts.
I have mates in Dumfries in the Hardly Rideable Scooter Club,
And i used to run about with the Scooter boys fae another wee town,(Newtown Stewart) as they hated the MODs as well, refering to them as a bunch of posers!
Scooterboys are generally into Bad Manners / King Kurt and bands of that ilk....and ive had some of the best nights out of my life with scooterists as they are generally not as uptight n pretentious as alot of bikers ive come across n they know how to have a good time!

right end of 1st lesson

There will be a test on friday!

No running in the corridor!

Later
Prof Ron....
