Just got off the phone with the DVLA and they were about as much help as a rectangular wheel.

Some question about 33bhp restrictions and that.

What is sufficient? You need a cert from FI international or whoever with your bikes details on?

Can a bike shop just make up a throttle stop or restrictor plate and provide a dyno chart to whomever needs it?

Am about to call insurance company now.....

Thanks in advance.

Im in the same situation as you at the moment mate, just passed my A2 and have a 400 waiting.

The basic facts are:

There is no standard way (eg that everyone MUST use) to show your bike is restricted. FI International obviously try and convince everyone that their way of resriction is the best and that the certificate makes you legal because they make a massive profit from it. To be honest the washer that they send you you can make yourself for about a tenner if you have the right tools/machinery. You are paying for the certificate.

you can make you rown washers/throttle stop and get it dyno'd to show that it produces less than 33bhp.

Ive rang loads of big insurance companies and only a handfull have said I would need to show proof my bike is restricted.

Restrictor kits tend to be a couple of washers of the right size, in the right place. At least on carb' bikes.

The certifiates offered have no legal standing.

If you should be required to prove you are under 33bhp then the Police will arrange for teh Bike to be dyno'd

Yeah but if I don't crash then I've wasted all the money I've spent on insurance and gear.

The cost of your restrictor is insurance for your licence.

i had my 600 done and i was given a letter with a letter head saying that the garage had seen the restrictor fitted - the garage doesnt have to fit it you can, aslong as they have seen it fitted and a letter of conformation is enough

Hi

It is a badly thought out law. Legally you just have to be on a bike under the power limit, and the power to weight ratio.

Not seen anything specifying where the power figure is measured, but suspect it is probably a crank figure. Similarly do you use the dry weight or the fully wet weight for the power to weight ratio limit?

Legally the FI certificate is of no more relevance than a post it note with "under 25kw" written on it. However it does show willing, just as a graph from a dyno run would.

All the best

Keith

if a copper asks if my bikes restricted and i say sure and produce the Fi thing, will that usually satisfy him? Obviously if I've been caught doing 140 mph then im screwed but im just talking a normal pull here, to check ins. etc.

probably not - because that doesnt prove anything..it jsut says you bought the kit or HAD it fitted.
and you dont need to keep it with you, take it with you when you need to produce your documents (if thats the case) and i doubt the cop at the shop will know what its for and will dismiss it totally.

On the other hand, get pulled by a pan and you are probably royally fucked, to put it bluntly.

A friend of mine has an unrestricted 636, got pulled by a Police rider on a Pan, he said he wasn't going to do anything because he was needed elsewhere, but he knew it wasn't restricted by the way he left the lights, how quickly he got to 40 etc. So not all coppers have no idea.

They might not ask for proof of restriction.

But in the event of a claim they might.

Personally I wouldn't risk it, there's someone on this forum, who got caught riding unrestricted.

And as such was done for riding without a license and this also invalidated his insurance and was done for that too.

Why risk it for 2 years.

Its not the end of the world.

Keeping to legal speeds, it shouldn't make too much of a difference.

I managed for 2 years, having a 92mph top speed caused no problems.

Wait your 2 years, get your experience.

I could ride my ER5 at 33bhp to the limits on some local twisties and I could really hammer it, I had to work the gears, then engine etc. It was ace.

Now with all the BHP on the Z, in some ways its not as much fun as I don't have to be as quick or exact.

Its no issue.

I bought my Fzs 600 in September and put the restrictor kit in at a cost of £120 from my local Yamaha dealer at the end of October.

Going to France over Easter, so I'll definately be taking it out then (do I need to have it in when in foreign countries?).

Might take it out this weekend if I have time and probably not put it back in, but we'll see how my conscience is... as I have already got 3 points on the licence, could do without more!!

Was wondering whys this not such a big problem with 50's
As i rarely hear of any of my mates or there mates running a restricted 50

heard some of there bikes go like 70
when the restriction is like 29.1mph?

Surely they wud get arse raped by insurance for that?

The limit is 31mph, and yes, if caught.

We've had this discussion. No stock 50cc engine will do 70. Even bicycles will do 70 going downhill.
