Silly question, I apologise.

With an OS map in hand, how can you tell a green lane? Footpaths or bridleways a no go?

Byways open to all traffic are usually marked as +++++ although I think it's different on some OS maps

Easy - but costs money:
Join the TRF for your local area.

Complicated - but free:
1) Register for free with https://www.way-finder.co.uk
2) Then go to: https://www.way-finder.co.uk/download/index.html
3) Download Track Explorer Lite - v1.07 and install it.
4) Download Overlay Exporter - v1.09 and install it.

5) Go back to: https://www.way-finder.co.uk homepage
6) Click on 'Grid Squares' (top left of the screen).
A map of the UK will open in a window with the regions in grid squares, each square with two initials in.
7) Note down the ones relevant to you. eg: SU and TQ are my local areas.
8) Open the TrackExplorer Lite software from your desktop.
A bare map of the UK will be shown with just towns/cities.
9) You will be asked to confirm your registration details (use the registration details from the way-finder website)

10) Within the TrackExplorer Lite software:
Click: VIEW > Goto Location.
This launches a small 'Grid ref' window.
11) Delete the existing grid reference and put the 2 letter reference for your area.
12) Click OK.
13) Click WAYFINDER > Download gridsquare SU (It will refer to the gridsquare you put in GoTo location)
14) Let the software download the gridsquare details.

The lanes from that area are then downloaded and shown on the map.
Green lanes are BOATS and (subject to you checking them) ok to ride on.
Yellow roads are under contention - so you need to check.
Red roads are not open to vehicular traffic.

Repeat this to add whatever grid areas you want.
They are valid for 30 days then need to be downloaded again.

You can zoom in and out to get to particular lanes.
If you have a scroll mouse use that, or use the on screen controls on the top right of the screen.

Right click on a lane of your choice and it will highlight it and open a new window showing the wayfinder lane sector details.
This confirms the lanes status, grid coordinates.

Now click on 'Google Map of Lane' to get a map of exactly where it is - altering view between map/ satellite/ hybrid.

Its a little complicated - but once setup you can easily mark the lanes on an OS map.[/list] Smile

On the 1:25000 the BOATS are

+++++++++

Footpaths and bridleways are no-go areas. Can have your bike seized if found on these.

When you are actually out there are sometimes posts marking the type of trail and byways (BOATS) are posts with a red arrow on them.

I've tried this today.. when i try download a map it comes up with

"Load of Gird Sq SD from wayfinder failed (unauthenticated)"

Whats up with that. What have i done wrong? Laughing

Did you join the way finder site and use your login details in track/overlay exporter?

Its slim pickings in the local area, but I have found a 'route' thats around a kilometre long and is lined by trees so maybe a puddle or 2? I will live to regret it I'm sure when I see a filthy bike, shit splattered all up my back and wet feet.

Oh well, its only mud!

I know that 70 is out of the question in the brown stuff, but is there a speed limit? More from a Trivial Pursuit type pub quiz question.

I think each council makes differing limits to each lane !
so in essence you could ride 2 different lanes under the control of the same council and have 2 different speed limits.
I have seen sections that are 50mph ?.. and the next lane is 30mph !
Bit of a gamble I guess then - but here is my 2 pence worth:
1) most trail riding groups have a self imposed limit of around 25mph - so that may be a good speed to adhere to.
2) on the muddy and rutty sections - anything near 25mph is going to be quick going anyway.
3) if you do decide to take a gamble and go hammering up a lane and into a bend - expect to see a horse... and then think about hitting that bad boy .... slows me down ... oh! and the fact that I am sh*t at riding off road Smile

The only time I've ridden on anything other than tarmac was when I had a go at a quad, so 2 wheels on a surface that may squelch and squirm about may be weird to say the least.

The roads have been bone dry today and I hope that a little moisture has lingered. As mentioned looking at maps.live.com the route looks like its covered by trees all the way so it should be soft, otherwise it may just be a bumpy brown road.

Quite excited about it actually.
