i really fancy doing a mini adventure this summer....im thinking of heading as far north as i can....

leaving northwest uk (wigan) im thinking about heading up to the lakes then hitting the coast one way or the other...and riding straight through to the top uf scotland....stay over....then carry on round.the coast and back down to northwest england on second day...

only an idea..havent checked any milages or maps yet......has anyone done this or can offer any advice in general.....is it too much......good roads....good idea / bad idea..... general opinions welcome as its only a thought at the moment......

dont wanna do any cities or sites...just coast roads or nice quiet a roads with some good senery...

any opinions welcome..

cheers

Go as far North as you can, as quickly as you can, you won't regret it. Then enjoy. Ideally get North of Forth William.

This may take some time.

I think you need to check those milages first.

seems a trifle optimistic to me.

The furthest north I've been is Thurso. I was driving a truck at the time. I started in Inverness, delivered to Wick, then up to Thurso for another delivery and returned to Inverness. That trip took the best part of 9 hours driving, and I wasn't hanging about, considering.

It isn't just the milage, the A9 is a fairly small road up there. Once you get past the more major towns, the road becomes even smaller. Single track with passing places isn't unusual.

Hi Stooster,
Five of us touring Scotland in June for the fourth year. Fantastic roads. If you can go from Loch Carron over Applecross Pass and up the west coast to Ullapool it will be the best run you can have. We,re up for six days and it never seems enough.
Our stops are, St. Andrews, Wick, Ullapool, Portree on Skye, Oban and the last night in the lakes on the way home to Sheffield.
You,ll love it.
Bill

I thought the roads/scenery anywhere North of the city of Stirling were pretty impressive, but as already said the further North you go the better it gets.

I went up the West Coast to Oban, Fort William across to Inverness and back down South via Aviemore, Pitlochry and Edinburgh.

Be careful of your timing- some of those roads can get windy and narrow, but great fun.

You won't regret it if you haven't been to Scotland before.

Cheers.

Its actually hard to believe that those places are in the UK. Watching that 'Mountains' TV program too and its just amazing what Scotland has to offer.

There is some absolutely FANTASTIC scenery there that it SO different to everything we have further south in England/Wales. It looks like it could be a million miles away, especially to people who live in big, flat conurbations like London and Birmingham.
When you think about it, its amazing. That place in the photos is in the same country as us! Wow

I'd allow at least three days/two nights if you want to go all the way to the north coast.

Use the A6 and B7076 (old A74) until you reach the south of Glasgow and then use the motorway to the Erskine bridge. They're much more fun and nearly as quick as using the M6/M74 (you'll need to use these to skirt around Carlisle) Thumbs Up

Then folow the A82 through Glen Coe and Fort William as far as Invergarry, the A87 out towards Skye (best biking road in the UK) and then head up the north west coast through Loch Carron, Glen Torridon, Gairloch and Ullapool as far as Tonge, before cutting cross country to Bonar Bridge, Inverness, the A939/A93 to Braemar and Perth, and then back down the A7 to Carlisle Cool

If the weather's good, I'd also recomend adding a loop of Skye, but allow another day for this.

Agreed and it will take at least a week. Two days to get to the top, two days exploring and two days to get home again allowing one day spare for the inevitable hangover you will be suffering from after enjoying the legendary local hospitality.

Thumbs Up

Not at all.. but it WILL be a long day.. I did Peterhead to Cambridge in a day, without touching motorway, and minimal dual carriage ways. It DID take 11 hrs tho.

....and British Wink

There's so much to explore on the British mainland - the West Country, Wales, the Peak District (midweek without the traffic) and pretty much anywhere north of the M62 Thumbs Up

The Scottish Highlands and Islands are truly world class though Mr. Green

I'll second that. Me and the old man did pretty much that route but came back down the west coast and hit the isle of Mull back on the way down, truly spectacular scenery.
