What are you off sick for? And what will you be doing when abroad?

Entirely depends what she's receiving; SSP, ICB or something from her employer.

Isn't the rule that you can be off sick , as long as the 'sickness' prevents you from doing your job?.

And thus broken leg working at a desk/call centre is a no no,

while a broken leg as say a taxi driver is ok sus it is something which prevents you from doing your job properly.

If she's been told to rest then its probably OK, but as someone said above, if her job doesn't involve her using her knee and the difficulty is that she can't get to and from work, then it would look a bit suspect IMO...

Yeah if she cant get to and from work to earn her money, how are they going to view it if she manages to get to france?

Got the feeling your mum doesnt commute 200 - 300 miles either way a day.

This actually isn't strictly true.
It depends on the employers insurance, which floor of the contact centre you work, and health and safety officials/fire marshals have to agree to it.
Imagine being on the third floor hip-to-toe in plaster, and there being a fire. You can't use the lifts as they automatically stop working with the alarm system, you have to go down the fire stairway.
It would endanger yourself and others by you being there.

Not only, but if the leg has to be kept elevated, you may not be able to do a desk job either.

A few months back, I had an infected insect bite in my leg and was signed off sick for a week, as I had to keep the leg elevated and quite obviously was not going to get it under the desk at work. The bosstard wasn't happy but I was! I'd rather have bubonic plague than work in that hellhole!

Hey
She is a special needs teacher, so had to push the pupils wheel chair sometimes, so cant really do that, she has the cast off at the moment but the Dr has signed her off work for another 4 weeks, and its the College that are paying her at the moment.
She is going to give them a call and ask, just thought I'd ask the wise people of BCF

Not true. Of course you are allowed to leave the house, who else is going to do your errands? Also, the doctor/physio may even have recommended you take gentle exercise or get plenty of fresh air, even for the mental well-being.

If boss or some one from work calls round you are supposed to be in

Agree apart from Dr or hospital appointments

I was on long term sick till recently by boss called round i had to explain why I was not able to answer the door also had to go in to office to discuss a few things

My brother was on very long term sick and his boss called him in

People suffering from mental illness/depression for example are often encouraged by their doctor/psychiatrist/etc. to get out and about doing things...
To the point where I attended a works Christmas party whilst on long term sick on the advice of my doctors.

As long as there is communication between the employer and the employee, going out shouldn't really be an issue.
If it is the case of a broken leg, and it is a legitimate reason for being off work,as mentioned above, it can't really be faked and as for a stay in a second home (if pre-booked flights have been arranged prior to the injury) I don't see why the company should have a problem with it.
Saying that, it all boils down to the employer's view on the subject, so as someone ^^ up there said - speak to them and ask where the employee would stand (excuse the pun.)

I went on holiday for a week while I was off work sick. I didn't bother telling my employers as they're arseholes and would have taken the stance that if I can go away then i'm fit to work.
One of my mates got a bollocking for emailing someone while he was off sick. His managers seemed to think that he should be tucked up in bed if he's sick, otherwise he obviously isn't sick.
Different firms have different rules, but if you have been signed off sick by a doctor then its his opinion that you are unfit for work, although his opinion is based upon the injury and your description of your job. Bit of a grey area really.
