I just spoke to one of my mates who is chief-finder-outer-of-things with Bloomberg.
He sent me this link.

Fuel. Bet it was lack of fuel. The electronics are pretty much not going to be to blame, and I'd bet my right ball that both engines would not simultaneously quit for any other reason.

Possibly , but then I remember way back in 1999 there were stories of Airliners coming in and landing empty and having to be towed into the terminal.

Why no fire when the wings have dirty great holes in them? Confused Rolling Eyes

But I would also bet that power failure is the 'official' line. Nobody could ever be allowed to think BA could cock up the fuel calculations. . .

I dont buy that. If it was fuel then one engine would have cut out initially, the second later. They wouldn't both cut out together.

It will be blamed on Boeing.
Their Plane's CCU/s/Data Link catastrophically failed.
On FBW aircraft it would not be impossible. It can only be made unlikely.

The pilots both calculate fuel weight etc. and corroborate. unlikely that both pilots and ground staff missed a fundamental like that.

London Heathrow suddenly raised it's height above sea level which confused the ILS. Was an option I was afraid to list, but since we mentioned 'Wind Shear' may as well list anything else.

My money is on the flight recorders holding the reasons and answers so I will wait until they are cracked open.

Still think they were lucky b*starts though. Laughing

It would be thrilling to have to fly out next day on your connecting flight after sliding down one of them chutes as well.

Just heard on the news that BA have said that although the wings are still attached, the aircraft is probably a write off.
WTF, I should bloody hope so. The thing has been slammed onto the ground at god knows how fast, tearing the undercarriage off in the process. I'm sure they could replace parts, but its not quite the same as dropping your bike and buying a few bits off ebay is it.

Another thing has struck me as odd. I've always heard that the most dangerous parts of a flight are the take off and landing. Now if thats the case where was the captain during the landing? The co-pilot did a great job, but would the outcome have been different with the main man at the helm?

I am pretty sure that the Pilot couldn't have done any better, the co-pilot did a very good job if the press conference the pilot is enough to go on. Managing to land it so close to the runway with everything dead is quite a feat.

You raise an interesting point though, where was the pilot. Thinking about it, perhaps they have a system whereby if something fails then the pilot sets his brain on trying to work out what's going on and try to fix the problem, and the co-pilot takes over control of the plane while the pilot does this.

Oh and could whoever said they ran out of fuel please explain why the runway was *covered* in fuel that had leaked everywhere.

The runway was *covered* in foam from the fire trucks. My x-ray specs can't see through that, dunno what yours are like....

They didn't put the foam on the runway to stop the concrete catching fire.

I've read it in a report somewhere.

Also, I imagine planes have fuel gauges. I'm sure the pilots would have realised something was up when the orange fuel light came on over the pacific ocean. I imagine there are a lot of airports between where a "omg you're running out of fuel" light comes on and Heathrow. The airport they're flying from, for one. Airplanes are clever, I really doubt that an aircraft wouldn't alert you when it does its fuel calculations based on the route that's in its GPS, before takeoff.

He got turned away from the Mid-Atlantic Shell Service station 'cause of their stupid bloody helmet rules.
Pilot said, "Fukc it. Let's just keep going and we can fill up in ASDA at Potter's Bar."
Story is, they'd had bother with the reserve tap, since last year's Plane-fest in Barcelona, where some cnut they'd met in a bar there, told them of a motorbike forum that has all sorts of help and information to sort ANY kind of problem with ANYTHING.
Any bets the air crash investigators (or JS Dad) will find, once they flip the fusilage over, that the tap was on main, but really it had been on reserve all the time. So the pilots must have thought that they still had some left.

Hi

There are requirements for a fairly substantial reserve amount of fuel on airliners.

All the best

Keith

And there is that law that states: You are not permitted to fly as far on empty.

My mate on MSN asked me today, why has it all gone queit on this story.

He said both engines failed at very low altitude, it passed over the road literally meters from the ground. He suggested some sort of scramble device could have been used.
A plan for something bigger?

This is his words not mine....is he smoking too much?

Theres a story on the bbc website that says that the engines were still running when the aircraft landed. My moneys still on a systems failure.

I don't know about the engines... But I bet the Pilot's rings were still running.

Bingo.
Why bother 'scrambling' when you could just fire a Stinger / RPG from the M1? Confused

In the unlikely event it was a staged attack, it would be less obvious to scramble the controls rather than use an RPG.

I think it's usually a simple explanation in these things.
Some folk read too much SciFi or X files... Laughing

If it was a scrambling device how would they direct it so only that aircraft was affected and not others in the Que?
Why did ATC not detect it?
Why is Big Brother STILL on the bluddy telly?

The whole point of a terror attack is to be noticed, doing something like this secretly and then not claiming credit is pointless.
