PostPosted: 00:06 - 30 Jan 2008    Post subject: Dark Visors (what is the Law?) Reply with quote

Can anyone please tell me what the law is on dark or tinted visors. I know that to wear one at dusk or night time is suicidal, but on bright or well lit sunny days what is the law and what can the law do to you for wearing one. I personally like my dark visor on such days ,It cuts down glare which on its own has to be a saftey factor and is less strain on the eyes and a lot more comfy than sun glasses.Besides that they look awsome on most hemets.I see 9 out of 10 riders using them but can't help but worry every time I go out in mine. I enjoy mine because it also hides my ugly mug Laughing Laughing Embarassed Can anyone please help on this matter?
Many Thanks
Karbon Kid

Hi

Illegal whatever the time of day. A legal tint is barely noticeable.

Having said that there is meant to have been some guidelines to the police recently to turn a blind eye to dark visors being used sensibly.

All the best

Keith

Thanks Kickstart
I heard something similar to that last year so there must be some truth in it,I suppose it's all down to which cop pulls you and if you were doing any thing crazy when he/she pulls you.

Hi
Best bet is to always carry a clear one with you.
I bought my tinted visor and got a free visor bag which fits nicely on my backpack.
This time of year with the sun so low in the morning a clear visor is a danger in itself especially coming round a corner smack into the rising sun.

Hi Bofh5
I did think of getting a visor bag and try to fasten it to the bike so that I never forget it.I now its a bit big but there's got to be somewhere to store it. But I will get one anyway and just wear it around my (slightly over size waist ) Embarassed Embarassed Laughing if I have to,at least it will give me peace of mind.
Thanks for that Thumbs Up

I could easily be wrong...
But I think it is not a point-able offence.
Crash helmet regulation stuff.

But I use tint and have never had any probs.

I've got a dark visor but I only use it now and again when really needed. Like on bright mornings when I go to college, the sun on the kings road basicaly blinds you. So its either break the law* or ride through traffic blind, easy decision! Just use common sense really, I'd imagine its something a copper would only do you for if he was feeling a bit pompous.

*I tried sunglasses in my lid, didn't work for me.

No what you mean.
Especially as you come round Forbury Road by the Prudential Building.
I'd hope that any copper would see the sense and realise its safer to have a tinted visor and see where your going than have a clear and be riding blind

I didn't really like the sunglasses idea (if I have an off, I'd rather not get them shoved into my eyes...) so I used a mirrored one on sunny days. I've passed coppers before with no problems, had one directing traffic after an accident even give me a thumbs up as I filtered along with it on. It all depends on the person you meet, and whether or not you're riding like a dick!

I agree it all depends on what sort of cop it is and what sort of mood they are in.
I spoke to a bike cop one day when I was walking through our local town center and he, even admitted that coppers on bikes usually saw things from a bikers point of view, because most of them are bikers themselves.I don't know how true that is?
He said the only advice he could give me was (dont draw attention to yourself if you can help it)but even he could'nt answer me on dark visors.
I suppose listening to other bikers experiences is the best way

I've seen coppers wear them. The special escort bods in Londinium have sometimes been seen on TV wearing really tinted visors.
I wear one, but like others have said, carry a spare clear one.
If you do get a knobby copper it is a £30 fine and he can confiscate the visor ( leaving you with no eye protection at all ) but I have heard that you can sign his note book to admit you have a tinted visor so he doesn't have to take it as evidence.

Spell checker wouldn't have picked up the incorrect spelling as they're spelt correctly, but incorrectly in their use. Like to, too, two. All spelt correctly but incorrectly when put in different meanings.
I know I can't spall for toffu but te meening is their. Wink

wow. This thread has really made me think. I've worn my Caberg 104 V2 double visor tech Lid for 2.5 years (not all the time obviously! Just when I'm on the bike) and it has one of those built in sun visors that you can flip down when required. I've always assumed that since it is legally on sale and conforms to British safety standards that it must be legal. Why do bike shops sell them if they are illegal?

Hi

Think the Caburg is legal, because the tinted bit is not legally the protective visor, and as such is not subject to the approval rules.

All the best

They can sell what they like.

If you got stopped for a dark or tinted visor you would be very unlucky. They are illegal in the same way as tinted dark windows on a car is illegal but as I say never known a ticket to be issued for one.

That's correct, the internal part is tinted, the actual "visor" is clear - therefore perfectly legal.

Thank's for the info so far.
I am sure that the Caberg hemets are legal and also some other makes like the Airoh with the pull down visor because you can put up the dark one but still be left with the clear one.
I think it maybe a case of getting pulled for something else and then he/she notices the visor and decides to nick you or warn you about that while they are at it.( I'm only guessing that)
I just wish we knew the actual facts .I recently bought an open face helmet made by Airoh with a half face fighter pilot type visor for the real hot days and that has a slightly tinted visor (noticable) that was fitted when I bought the helmet and that has a (standard mark) on it and it also has (for daytime use only) printed on it , I'm not so worried about that one,it's my dark one on my full face that I am concerned about.
Many Thanks
Karbon Kid

Hi Skudd
After reading your post I noticed your persoal message at the bottom of the page and had a good laugh Laughing Laughing Laughing
I know this has nothing to do with this thread so I will apologise now.
But it made me think of an old ryme we used to say:

Humpy Dumpty sat on the wall
Humpy Dumpty had a great fall
All the kings horses
And all the kings men
Said F*** it (He's only an egg)

Sorry!! Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing
