Basically, im in debt not massively, about £900 total over two credit cards, this has been for bike servicing and repairs and also paid this years insurance.

Now, i need my bike test doing, now i can either whack it on my credit card and get it done a.s.a.p or pay off my credit card, will take 6/7 months as im on a part time wage at the moment and do my DAS then and hope that the bike test centres arent booked up too much.

Suggestions.

Get shot of the credit card debt as soon as possible is my advice, then don't run it up again. Cut one of them in half, if you are doing a part time job, it is nothing more than a dangerous temptation. If you don't feel you can trust yourself with the other but want to keep it for emergencies, freeze it in a container of water in your deep freeze.

If you need to borrow money for something specific, get a loan off your bank with a clearly set out repayment plan.

I have seen credit cards get out of hand very quickly. They are usefull as a tool for shopping on the internet, they are a very dangerous way to borrow money for someone on a low income due to their tendancy to build up debt in a compounding fashion.

EDIT: It also occurrs to me that if it is going to take you that long to essentially 'save up' £900, the last thing you need is to be maintaining and insuring a full power motorbike. Motorcycling can be cheap but it isn't THAT cheap and 125s are a hell of a lot cheaper to run than bigger bikes. Maybe wait 'till you're earning enough to both afford and justify doing your test?

Yes.

Stinkwheel is right.
Cheaper to maintain a little bike till your debt is cleared, then go for the test and a bigger bike.

Thing is you could always book the test now , and take it later anyway to prevent overbookage.

But credit cards = dangerous ,

I'm a tad too sensible for this but my sister is utterly reckless with them.

Go to bank see if you can take out loan enough to cover your cards plus extra to get through test then cut cards up and send them back to credit companies

I have about 1k on cc's and I'm tad worried, I earn enough to pay it off in 2 month too! Get rid of them.

I would do what itchy said book now so the test isn't booked up. Maybe get a loan with a low interest rate and cut up the credit cards. You will only need a 1k loan so i can't see you paying back much more than you lent. Once you get out of debt save so much % of your wage each month and put it in a high interest account so if anything fooks up again you will have something to fall back on.

Unless you credit card had 0% deal on in which case cut up the card anyway and just pay it back off that. Or sell some shit and get it all sorted quickly.

I have no outstanding Debts Laughing - That felt good!

But i am also unemployed!

Get rid of your cc as soon as possible even if your get a loan over a period of time. I've seen a couple of my mates (18-21year olds) on part time jobs get in serious debt because of them!

-- A great way to stop spending money is to actually sit down and write out what you have coming in - out! Helps work out what you can cut out!

Your test can wait for a couple months (till your finical situation looks a little better)

I'm the opposite, tests are going to get harder and more expensive, do them early and stick to your 126 till your debts are cleared up. Worry about a new bike later.

I make it my life aim to never own a credit card.

As others have said 125's are far cheaper to run than bigger bikes, stuff like tyres get really expensive after the 125 stage. Fuel is a lot more expensive as well.

Why? Confused Used properly they can be a great financial tool, giving you an emergency "cushion" and in the case of the 0% ones much cheaper than a loan as you can pay off the min bal each month while putting enough to clear by the end of the 0% period into a 5-6% savings account.

Just to dismiss them out of hand suggests that you're not that
switched on about your finances, you're just not able to trust yourself with one.

Personally I have 6 at the moment, giving me a joint credit limit of well over £50k. I have an outstanding balance (from buying my bike last July) of £4k on just one, which is interest-free until April and I have been paying it off at approx £50/month. The £4k is in a savings account earning 6.25% and has been since July. The interest I will have earned by the time I clear the card will be around £180, which should pay for the bike's second (and major) service at 4000 miles/12 months. Smile

bwfc I would recommend you get a 0% card if you can and put way the others (or cut them up if you don't trust yourself). Transfer your balances and do what I've suggested above re paying the min and putting cash into savings at the same time. By the time you've reached the end of the 0% period if you have been careful you may have saved more than you need to clear the card and can put that towards your test. Thumbs Up

Maybe when I am more financially secure, but I am well aware that I am liable to impulse purchases, so would prefer to save for something.

For emergencies I have an overdraft.

Loads of them.

If you use moneysupermarket properly you can get an assessment of your credit profile and they will whittle the list down to cards you are more likely to get accepted by.

I'll give them a shot, will make things easier. I can put it on 0% for 12 months, save up for my bike test, hopefully pass that, then spend the rest of the year paying off the debt. And then end of the summer or earlier perhaps sort a new bike out then.

Priority is to get the debt to a more managable situation and paid off pronto Smile
