First time new tyres; Help and advice needed

Well, the back tyre on my CBR125 has goten rather squared off, and has about ~1mm of tread left in the middle (and about 2mm+ at the sides )

I've read before that the best tyres for this bike are BT39SS's.

Where would i go to get the tyres changed? The local Honda dealer is only about a mile from my house. Would they do tyre changes for me?

And would they be able to get specific tyres for me, or would i be better off buying them online, then taking hem with my bike to a bike garage to get it done??

Oh, and what is the going rate for a tyre change?

ride in ride out in mancs can vary from £40 (where the mobile guy drives to your place of choice within 40 miles) , to £6 a wheel.

Firstly just go look at some local bike shops and ask, then look for specific tyre places, but hey near you are a couple of race tracks maybe buy your own and go there for some fitting , though they might not balance and replace your valves though.

One of the security guards at work rides a blackbird, so i had a chat with him today about where he gets his tyres done.

Theres a place called "Extreme machines ltd" in whetstone (south of leicester) that he gets his done at. Told me to speak to "Daryl" (the owner).

So thats what i'll be doing sometime this week

take off the wheels and have them done loose then should cut the fitting fee inhalf, get somebody to take you there, the tools required to take off the wheels cost less than £20 in total.

Guy said he'd fit them for free to loose wheels, and for "a nominal fee" if i took the bike down.

I don't have the tools or knowledge to remove the wheels, and tbh, i can't be bothered with the hassle.

I'd rather pay a few quid to make sure it was done properly.

Well its pretty easy anyway , caliper off (CBR125 only has one) , screw driver in the spindle hole, spanner and socket on each end undo, pull out, spindle and thats it for the front.

Back is sort of like chain adjustment , undo the spindle bolt, off with the rear caliper (me NTV wheel is easy , CBR wheel the caliper comes off on the boss of the swing arm), chain to one side , pull out the spindle , roll wheel out its very simple.

EDIT I can do this with just the tool kit that comes with Hondas so you probably have the tools too,



Oh and tyre men aren't always fantastic either one I used recently managed to remove me sprocket , and cush rubbers and forget to put the cush rubbers back in , Gaz/Ken have never heard of torque wrenches etc.

Got nothing to prop the bike up on!

(I want to get some paddock stands, but not going to bother until i get a bigger bike.)

Will see if i can do i as a ride in - ride out. Ie. no fucking abou coming back later to pick the bike up.

That way i get to watch the guy work, make sure he doesn't do anything... funny.

I got pilot sporty tyres back and front for £100 plus fitting at skellerns in worcester which was very reasonable. Just left the bike at them while at college.

What size are the tyres on the YBR?

Theres about 4 different tyres to fit the back (100/80 - 17) but only one that fits the front, a BT-39SS. (80/90 - 17).

If im correct, the first number is the width, and the second number is the "profile" of the tyre. (And the 3d is the diameter of the rim).

I'd of thought both tyres would need to be the same profile?

No the profiles don't need to be the same on both tyres.

yes, the first number is the width, the second is the profile (which is a percentage of the width, hence 100/80 is 80mm and 80/90 is 72mm), third is the wheel diameter and if there's a letter in there such as R or Z it's the speed rating for the tyre.

That's about £170 for pair of BT-39SS's, and £10 to remove wheels / tyres / fit new tyres / balance / refit / align wheels+tension chain.

Guys gonna order them in tomorrow.

Well to give an update on this, the guy ordered the tyres late, and ordered the wrong ones!

So i spoke to my gfs stepdad and he gave me the number for Bike Treads in swindon. Big thumbs up to them, rang them, they got my tyres in within a day, and i got them sorted this morning. Top class servic, all done for £150, which is better than what the other place wanted!

Wasn't too bad riding on the new rubber, didn't feel slippy, although i was being very cautious, and wasn't exactly going fast. New tyres do seem to pick up alot of shit though, as though the surface of them is sticky.
