on the waqy to work this morning was going along as usual...come to the set of traffic lights see the road is clear ahead and started filtering past a few cars. Then some muppet on a bicycle decided to come between 2 cars and edge his bike out. Cue me slamming on the brakes locking the wheel sliding into him!

didnt do a lot of damage. Infact it was quite a surprise only the front brake lever is a bit wobbly.. all scuffs were already there from a previous drop i had. Had a bit of a go at him but he was in quite aq bit of pain on his leg so i let him be Twisted Evil

why do these muppets never look!!!!

One reason not to filter too fast....

I bet there was even a cycle lane on the inside as well....

Seems that cyclists don't like to use them.. Twisted Evil

only going about 10-15 mph not even that only problem was i saw him quite late and it was wet... plus the fact i paniced and jjust grabbed! oh dear you know im pretty darn sure there is a cycle lane... it happened just before a junction heading onto the old A13 towards Dagenham so theres quite a few cycle lanes around there. Just happy im crashing this in the winter rather than crashing a bigger more expensive bike!

Hold on there was a bump... there was damage and somebody was hurt? ,

you did stop check each other over and report it to the cops right?.

It may sound ridiculous even if you are the victim of a hit n run al la Sadie about 2 years back YOU can get done for not reporting it,

Unless he was coming out between two vans, people carriers or 4x4s then really you should have seen him - cyclists are much taller than cars.

Consider it a lesson learned.

I do accept that he was at fault, and should have taken more care, but it's better to avoid the accident in the first place.

thats nothing buses around here don't use bus lanes, and on the odd occassions that they do they try overtaking each other.

There is an awful road round where I work bus lanes on both sides , which causes incredible traffic problems , to prevent bikers filtering easy they installed traffic islands , so I ride RIGHT on the white lines and go down the inside.

what and nobody here has filtered ?

where they filter between the nose / tail of the gaps in cars? ,

absolutely essential for the junction outside the MEN Arena, as it splits into 4 roads and nobody ever lets you in there.

You were going way to fast for your capabilities then. Lucky there were no serious injuries.

For a moment there I wondered whether that's what some car drivers see/think in regards to reckless bikers.

regarding the last 2 posts.

Do you 2 not filter? Im more than capable of riding a bike have so for many years got my first bike aged 4 a Honda QR50. Face the facts i was filtering at probably 10mph tops and a bike pulled out within 5 metres of me, not alot i could have done and anyone jumping to conclusions should think about how they would feel in my boots!

Of course.

I'm not having a go, cyclists are pretty random sometimes and do tend to be make their own rules (like every other one of them jumping a red light, maybe for some kind of 'chicken run' with whatever may be in their path (bus, small child, wall, etc).

But I tend to bend the rules everynow again too.

I could just imagine reading a similar thread on a car forum (not that I'd ever find myself on one that is).

P.S. Were you filtering as early as 4 years old?

Cyclists are the biggest menace on our roads.

At least cagers have a basic understanding of the highway code. Granted, they may not obey them all the time, like we do, but cyclists are a total law unto themselves.

I've had two cyclists go onto the side of me, the worst one was in Edgware where this dude rides off the pavement straight into a bus, bounces off the bus and lands square into the side of my bike.

He was quite badly hurt, I stopped to offer first aid, the bus driver (typical of london's) just carried on. Fortunately there was a police car not too far up the road so they were able to get him sorted quite quickly.

I don't often get road rage but the one incident that made me seeth was a cyclist who thought he didn't have to stop for pedestrians using a crossing. He went straight through a lady pushing a pram and knocked it out of her hands. I jumped straight out of the cab and knocked the bloke flying.

Only done so for the last 20 odd years. Wink

You were going faster than you could see ahead to stop safely, that's fact. You said yourself you saw him quite late, bad observations, a bike is higher than any car and anything like a van, lorry or 4X4 you should pass with caution, what if it was a pedestrian? You should treat everyone out there as if they are fools and expect the un-expected to happen.

You say your more than capable but again you said you panicked and grabbed at the brake in the wet. Yes accidents happen and sometimes can't be avoided. I am only going on things you are telling us and IMO you were going to fast for your capabilities.

sorry but a bicycle is not taller than a land rover Neutral

i tend to look around but mostly straight ahead sorry if i didnt look through every car window at the time i tend to watch things that are more improtant

I'm not going to get into a debate here, just a little tip. Learn to read from your peripheral vision - to keep relatively space, it's best to get yourself as much information as possible when riding through any particular environment. Your peripherals are pretty good at picking up unrecognized or unprepared movement (unless said object is travelling at similar speed/direction). Focusing/concentrating only on your vanishing point when riding through town might miss a couple of potentially hazardous details.

I think some people on here are being a little harsh to the OP.

Sometimes it just is not your fault. This sounds like one of those incidences.

Someone said 'what if it was a pedestrian?' well I say to that - tough shit.

The cyclist shouldn't have been so fucking stupid to pull out when shielded from view like that.

As people may know, I am a keen cyclist, and commute daily to work, often I have to move from the left of the road to the middle when in heavy traffic. I always make sure I do this between cars only, and do it fucking slowly, and check to my right for filtering bikes. Seriously the guy must have been retarded.

Yeah, the OP will be more careful now, but it really doesn't sound he could have done much about it. Life is like that sometimes.

^

am i the only one here who is thinking of those adverts where the kid is in the middle of the road and gets hit by the car, and they go on a rant about speeding.

err not really, i think the lesson to learn here is not let your kids walk in the middle of the road.
