What's the coup on this bike? Good? Shite? Things to look out for (rear shock...?).

I'm assuming the SRAD is a v-twin configuration (I'm not up on Suzukis)?

Any input would be appreciated, cheers. Smile

Unless its a TL1000R which is also a SRAD but a v-twin.

Fasteners are soft and corrode easily but panels and parts seemed better quality than the K1. the 750 after 98 will be fuel injection.

I recall something about the shocks on them having issues, but that might be a completely different model/version?

How do they handle?

Track day toy Hetz? Not a fan personally, they look a bit on the bulky side for my liking but that's just me.

The seven fiddy's have got USD forks which gives it a much more planted feel compared to the 6.

I wouldn't say no if given one, but would i buy one? Nope i don't think so. Just on the basis of appearance Razz

The latest Fast Bikes mag has a buyers guide for the 750 SRAD. I'll scan it in if you want.

It says 1996-1999, but might be something useful there.

A 2000 SRAD will be the same as a 1999, just a late registered one.

The bike you are thinking of with the 'dodgy rear shock' is probably the TLR1000, which had a rotary rear damper, and was shit, AFAIK.

As with most Suzukis the build quality is fairly poor, the brakes were always the achilles heel of the SRAD, ideally you'd want braided hoses on there and regular rebuilds of the calipers, later models had FI.
By modern standards quite a big and bulky bike, in comparison my K5 750 feels absolutely tiny!
Go on, you know you want to......

Yup, in comparison to modern bikes like your blade they are much bigger - wide tank and the big arse makes them look big, however the positioning is more extreme - more bum up and higher pegs than the modern stuff. Longer distances fuck my knees something rotten.

No steering damper either, which may be disconcerting for you! I get regular headshake coming out of corners under power on the 600. That's what it's all about though isn't it.

I remember Wave telling me that TL1000R's had some wank rotary rear shock and that many people swapped them for aftermarket ones. Not sure if that applies to the IL4 750 SRAD though.

Thanks Matt. What year is that article?

Unfortunately what was looking like a good year-2000 buy is looking much less attractive as a year-1999. Parker's has it at £2040 in good condition; the price it's up for is £1700, with minor damage, which is no particular bargain at all apart from the low mileage (9k).

Thanks for the input chaps. Smile

I think we all guessed which bike you were on about by the first post, you are best off asking over at gixerjunkies.net but at that price he really isn't lying it is a bargain.

Really? I found my SRAD to be extremely comfortable over longer distances - well, as comfortable as sportsbikes get, seat is fairly low, as are the pegs. I would say that the riding position is much more 'sporting' on my current K5 model - pegs seem quite a bit higher in comparison, however that may well be down to me being older and less fit than i used to be.
Gixers never had the 'widowmaking' rotary rear shock that the TLRs got, standard monoshock type rear and USD fronts - 600s had RWUs.
That FB article lists the front brakes as 6-pot calipers, but i'm fairly sure that they were the same (shit) Tokico 4-pots as fitted to the 600 - i've got my workshop manual for the SRADs somewhere, if i get a chance i'll dig it out and double check. I think it wasn't till the K series thous that they went 6-pot - now they are back to 4 pot (but radial mount with radial master cylinder) like on my K5 and are fantastic!

It's a very good bike for the money if you're buying it to own and ride. However, I was looking to buy it for a mate with the idea he'd put some towards it and pay me off the rest as and when able. If that didn't come to fruition I figured I'd be able to sell it on relatively easily. Unfortunately the psychological barrier of year 1999 vs year 2000, plus the difference between Parker's 2040 vs 2450 makes £1700, plus fixing the damage, plus cost of picking it up, unviable for me. My 1998 Blade went for a very shabby £1800 when it was worth a fair bit more than that, so I'm a bit leery of getting saddled with a money-loser that wasn't going to be for me in the first place.

And as bikes seem to have trouble reaching Parker's prices anyway it'd be even more of a risk.

Not knocking the bike. As I said above, good bike for the money for somebody looking to own and ride it themselves.

only problems known are the automatic cam chain tensioners are a bag of wank crisps that back out when you roll off throttle...

replace with a manual CCT and BAM, awesome bike.

I don't agree with that at all, I had a GSXR750 SRAD and the riding position was far from extreme, very comfortable inface, releatively low pegs, high bars and seat is set deep into the bike so you sit in it rather than perched ontop. Of the modern bikes ive owned or ridden enough to comment, the CBR600RR is far more extreme, K4 onwards GSXRs are more extreme, modern Ninjas much more extreme and the R6 although smaller and more perched is not too bad.

However I do agree the frontend can shake occasionally when you accelerate hard, particularly if the ground is uneven, though mine was a 750 with USDs so don't know how that compares to a 600 with RWU forks. Never had anything approaching a tankslapper though. My 97 GSXR is probably the best handling bike i've owned, CBR600RR was close but just never felt as stable.

The late (98-99) 750 had tokico 6 pots for definate.

The later 750s also had the standard suzuki steering damper which was mounted under the bottom yoke.

they look bigger than they feel when your riding them, which is a bonus as they look massive!

£1700 isnt bad for a 2000 750 with 9k, but if you cant find panels before buying you may be waiting for the right ones if you want to keep it OE standard -- which is probably best as the srad 750 is touted to be a future collectors item.

I have 2000 SRAD 750, unlike the 600 they have the USD forks, braced swing arm, 6 pot calipers, fuel injection (98 onwards) and come with a (crap) steering damper. They are physically bigger than the current crop of bikes as was the styling of sports bikes back then, but as said they look bigger than they are to ride. The 750 srad was suzukis flagship superbike in the days before the 1000s which is why they are still rated quite highly even by today standards.
Main weakness is the cam chain tensioner, as is the norm with many suzukis. The build quality isnt bad and finish is ok, although the standard mudguard and ram air tubes in 'carbon effect' are rank! Sick

i have a 97 srad750, and I also agree that the riding position is not extreme at all I found it to be OK. the bike is big but once on it it doesnt feel big at all.

brakes are shit, they stop you well enough but I 've had problems with mine. they make knocking noises(which is common) when you brake, the master cylinder just stopped working after trying to bleed it as it was spongy.
the suspension is very good in stock form I must say, best stock suspension ive had.

My bike doesnt have a damper and fuck me it does need it. if you lean the bike at big speed and hit a bump you'll know about it.

i bought a bad example as the owner just didnt look after it, I paid £1450 and spent another£500 so far.

I've raced my friend with an 2006 r6 and the acceleration is exactly the same upto about 155 -160 ish (ran out of road)but the gsxr is meant to have the better top end speed and also has around 10ft lb of torque more over the rev range

I rode both before I decided on the GSXR, the 7R is way behind in every respect, riding position is absurd, handling is slow and heavy in comparison. On the upside it looks far better and the engine is nice and grunty for a 750. GSXR is a far more capable bike though.

I adore my 600. They're comfortable, quick, sexy, cheap, parts-a-plenty.

The S in SRAD stands for 'scuffed'. You'll never find one that hasn't been dropped.

750s can be picked up fairly cheap, I wouldn't pay more than £2k for one. Don't think any of the 750s had carbs, carb icing plagued the 600s until they got heaters.

I think they're cracking bikes.

Blue and white is sexiest! And you're allowed to buy a blue and white one, because at least the huge arse sets you apart from everyone else.
