Naah, Korn just implemented a link to the DVLA database, so if you don't have a bike license, then you can't see the forum.

There was a problem with the routing equipment at the datacenter BCF is hosted in.

Kornel told me a rat managed to find its way into the datacenter and chew through the cables at the bottom of the rack. This caused some of the equipment on the rack to burst into flames.

Luckily for us who were having withdraw symptoms, the fire suppression equipment extinguished the fire before it could eat the BCF server. Praise the lord.

This forum is one of the best forums I've ever joined, however - it's also the only forum I'm with (and I'm a member of several) that constantly has 'server unavailable' issues. So I'm afraid I think people have a right to have a little rant sometimes about the reliability of BCF.

Why do you have any right to rant about the reliability? BCF is provided for free and unlike VD hasn't sold out. You have no right to rant about the reliability of a service that you use for FREE.

Kornel puts a lot of time and money into this site. I know he doesn't post here as much as he used to but i know for a fact that he is constantly working on back end stuff to make the site run as well as it can on the hardware it is hosted on.

Like has already been mentioned on here before, i believe there is a new server on the way so chill out and be patient.

Woah, easy boy! Rolling Eyes

I'm not having a rant at anything, just saying I think other people have a right to if they want, that's my opinion and you've got yours!
Fact is, free or not one of the reasons people do rant about this kinda stuff is because it IS a good forum and just a shame one or two things spoil that from time to time...

I agree with you and I think its pretty good considering... But most members won't know how the site is funded, or how much it costs to run, or anything like that really.

Here's the lowdown:

It costs a LOT to run a site with bandwidth like this.

Korn pays for it mostly from his own pocket, and he recoups a small fraction of the cost from the miniscule amount of advertising on the site. Most of the advertising is aimed at guests and users with lower Karma, and isn't intrusive. Any changes/updates are done my Korn, and most of the custom elements of the forum are written by Korn.

Additionally, BCF is probably the second largest UK forum (after Visordown - which is now commercial!) and I think thats a pretty impressive achievement.

The Triumph forum T595.net for example, has a 'premier membership' scheme where you only get all of the forum features if you pay a subscription charge of £9.55 per year. BCF doesn't have that.

If Korn does move BCF to a new server, then great. I personally think that getting rid of the workshop manual thread and the pr0n password thread would also help a bit too...

Well, send Kornel a cheque for like £50 a month to go towards the costs of the server this is hosted on and you'll have a right to rant. Thumbs Up

I think that the word 'rant' is obscenely overused on internet forums.

That isn't actually a bad idea, i know i'm getting loads of traffic to my manuals archive through that thread.

I'm guessing most of the visitors to that part of the forum are finding the links and buggering off somewhere else without ever contributing to the site.

Thing is, the various links on the internet will still be pointing to BCF so the hits will still be coming in.

I'm with the "It's free so don't complain" crowd. I can't remember the last time it went down, and that's since 2002.

Visordown is a poo hole, always has been, always will be probably, mainly down to the vermin that inhabit it. Not used it since it got bought out by the magazine, but doubt it's changed.

No I didn't mean it had been down... but why is it this is the ONLY forum of 5+ that I use regularly throughout the day that I occassionally keep getting the 'Server too busy' message on!? Confused I never get it on any others...

Anyway, I never intended this to be a complaint/rant whatever about the forum - just my personal musings! Wink
I'm perfectly happy to put up with getting that message from time to time because I get so much out of the forum, like the rest of us. I think its excellent and the karma is a very good idea!

However I am of the opinion that if you provide a public service you are always going to get feedback of one sort or another, wether that service be provided free or not.
If you stood on a street corner giving out free coffee all day that tasted shit, the people tasting that coffee still have a right to voice their concerns to the provider it tastes crap!! Laughing
