Hi again,

This thread began here

https://bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=137631

But as the bike has transformed into a project I think its more suited to this section.

Anyway I bought the bike for £70 out the Mrs' uncle, its a 1995 Suzuki Rg125f with ~15551 miles on the clock. It was in tatty condition with cracked fairings and a broken top end and powervalves.

Here's the bike when I bought it.
https://aycu12.webshots.com/image/43571/2000422031461959487_rs.jpg

Here's the rolling chassis and the frame
https://aycu28.webshots.com/image/43587/2002321016500180129_rs.jpg
https://aycu18.webshots.com/image/44057/2002339202582908873_rs.jpg

These are the things that I need to do:

Replate/replace cylinder
Get new piston kit
Get new chain
Spray exhaust
Spray Frame
Spray fairings
Get logos made
Get new clutch lever
Respray odds/ends
Get new grips
Get new tyres
Get new battery
Get some indicators

Then put everything back together!

Got a few questions, what paint would you recommend for the frame and fairings? Also a paint for odds/ends like handlebars, kickstand etc? Also anywhere for any other parts listed.

Thanks,
Jack

Get the frame and swingarm powder coated. You'll thank yourself!

It looks better than new. Is far more hard wearing than spraying and you're guaranteed it'll look good. A home spray job usually looks like a home spray job.

Cheers Gaz, you're from Bristol right? Around how much does the powder coat cost and where would you recommend that I'd get it done?
Also in regard to home spraying (Edit) of the fairings (Edit) is it possible to get a good finish using a can? My old man thinks he can do it because he sprays trucks and forklifts at work but I'm not 100% convinced as I see these being entirely different from each other.

Thanks again,
Jack

Wicked.

Out of curiousity, how big are your wheels, what size tyres do they take?

The front is 100/80-17

The rear is 130/70-17

Out of curiousity, why did you want to know? Very Happy

£70, you could make a fortune selling it for parts! Anyway, glad to see another smoker will still be on the roads. 2 strokes will be worth fortunes in a decade or so.

Yeah I'm in Bristol, but I'm not /from/ Bristol!

RPA Powder coating is good. They're cheap, but they don't like the internet, so the only way to get anything out of them is phone them or go down there. (Sometimes they don't answer the phone).

A good spray job is a good spray job regardless of what it's sprayed on. You /can/ get a good finish with rattle cans. But it'll never be as good as a pro job. Again, I know a guy who does spraying, he's a member of bristolbikers.co.uk, Ace is his nick.

Yeah Jack, I know it would probably more economically beneficial to sell it as spares but it would be a shame to take another smoker off the road. Especially considering the small numbers of this particular bike on the road. I still don't know whether to keep this bike or sell it afterwards, only time will tell I guess.

Anyway my Old man will be spraying the frame in work next week. Then I'll get a rolling chassis together and hopefully put the engine in for the weekend. Then all that will be left to do will be the fairings, will post progress as and when its completed.

Cheers,
Jack

True, I've got 3 strokers now I'll keep them as part of my pension plan lol. It'd be good to restore the rg, can't wait to see the end result.

RGs have always been one of my favourite 125 strokers, they just have such an old school cool about them. I can't wait to see it done!

I've finally finished rubbing down the frame and swing arm, it took aggggggggessssss. The old man will be spraying it in work next week and I will post photos as soon as its done. I've got Uni coursework coming up so progress may be a little slow over the next week or two.

Also, I need to buy a chain and piston kit, any recommendations on where to get either of these parts? Ta.

Thanks for looking,
Jack

Hi again,

Just a little update, the frame is at the Old man's work and should be sprayed sometime this week (hopefully ready for the weekend). Also the engine arrived today and the barrel looks good, nice and smooth with some honing marks present. Bottom end also looks good with no excessive movement of con-rod (not that I need the bottom end). So hopefully the bike will be back into a rolling chassis by the weekend , I'll post some pics if it reaches that stage.

Anyway, now the time has come to buy a new piston kit and I was wondering which one you'd recommend? I was considering either Mitaka, Prox, Wiseco or Vertex which would you recommend? I like the sound of the Prox (nice and light, but forged so still strong) and vertex as the single ring = less friction, which means that the bike is able to rev higher easily (apparently). But the disadvantage of the single ring is that it wears out quicker and therefore requires greater frequency of replacement (apparently).

So would there be noticable difference in performance between and single and double ringed piston? What frequency does a single ring piston require replacement? All in all is it worth it (in terms of cost over benefits)? Should I instead opt for a double ring piston, if so which?

Also the tyres currently on the bike are really hard and my guess is that these would now be unsafe for use, but apparently if I treat them like a new set and wear them in they'll 'soften' up again and be fine to use. What's your opinion on this? Other than the 'hardness' the tyres look near new in terms of tread.

Thanks for your time,
Jack

P.s. I'm at UWE reading for a Ba in Geography, I know what you mean about doing coursework lol.

Old tyres dry out and crack, have a look at the spare tyres on the back of 4x4s, they're death traps.

As far as the pison kit goes, have a search on 125ccsportsbikes.com - there's bound to be threads on the forum dedicated to that topic.

I thought as much about the tyres, yeah I've checked out www.125ccsportsbikes.com and I've decided to go with a double ring, not sure which either a prox or a wiseco probably.

Cheers,
Jack

aslong as the tyres are not cracking then I personally would just use em. they will eventually after a few miles be nice and sticky again Smile

Yeah there is no cracks at all, as previously mentioned they look near new except their 'hardness'.

Hmmm, the varying opinions make me unable to decide what to do. If I did buy new tyres, is there any particular brand that you'd recommend? I'd probably buy them from pro-tyre in Bristol, as recommended by many mates. Anywhere else you'd recommend?

I'd recommend BCT Motorcycles. I've bought from them twice, they do next day delivery and they're dirt cheap.

Haha, I'll post more once progress has been made otherwise it'll be just repeats of the same thing. Me and the old man will be spraying the fairings ourselves so it was about £15 for 3 cans of plastic primer and about £15 for 3 cans of blue/white paint. My Dads mate also quoted us ~£30-40 to make the original logos for the bike, which I'm well happy about. So all in all it'll be ~£60-70. My old man was planning to spray the frame in work last week but he didn't have enough time but it should be done by next week. I just need to order some gaskets, piston kit and small end and I'll put the engine back together soon-ish.

A little off-topic but I was planning to do my dissertation on motorcycle accidents and wanted to gague levels of participitation (of those who've been involved in an motorcycle accident) in a short questionaire/interview. If you're willing to take part then just PM me and please give rough details of WHERE you had your accident.

Cheers,
Jack
