Ok, basically, almost everyone has gone from a smaller cc bike to a bigger one at somepoint, how was it? Which seemed really fast, or really slow?

I started nearly a year ago on a 125, after 2 months on that I got a 400cc bike, the change in speed was quite alot, but wasn't scary or unusual, probably because it was similar to the speeds of cars, which I have driven for quite a while (I now don't own a car Very Happy )

After having the 400cc for about 6 months, I've gone and got myself a 600. And bugger me does it seem fast right now, I've only had a week on it so far, but it seems much bigger than the 125>400 cc jump.

Coulod be something to do with the fairing - my 400 was naked, yet the 600cc thundercat as a pretty big fairing!

ZXR 250 (45bhp?) > CBR 600FS > ZX6R 636 B1H

The ZXR was scariest for longest Laughing

The CBR took about a month to get used to i think, then jus got bored of the power when coming out of bends etc, just waiting for the revs to rise and see me in to 3 figure speeds...

The ZX6R blew my mind for a couple days, manly due to the extra torque. Really is noticable. Fires out of corners with much more go that the CBR.

Theres nothing like the feeling of coming off a shitbox 125 and going to something much more powerful, i remember the first time i took the vstrom out after passing my test. It felt so fast i thought the earth was gonna go backwards. Laughing And i got the same feeling with the honda, wtf im going to do next time i want a speed hit i dont know. Neutral

The first bike i rode on the road in Dubai was a Honda CD200 which i did my test on. After that? CBR 600RR and i've only wanted more since that jump! Everything else just feels really sluggish now.

I went from a CBR125 to a Bandit 600, and holy crap, at first the Bandit seemed like a missle compared to the 125.

I literally found it hard to hold on to the handle bars when pulling back the throttle, but now after about 3 months it seems underpowered!

Went 4st 125 -> 2st 125 -> 650 single -> 600 sports -> tuned 900.

Felt pretty fast each step up to the 600, but didn't really notice anything 'feel' faster after riding sports 600s.

Going from the 100 to the 250 was no problem whatsoever. It was a case of going from being vunerable and an obstacle to being an equal on the road - if anything it was more of a "Thank fuck for that" kind of feeling. The 250 to the 900 was a wakeup call. Almost four times the power and 60% heavier, the speed was a novelty for maybe 6 months, but I did miss the flickability of the 250.

I went

Piaggio NRG50 -> Honda XR125 -> Kawasaki ZXR250 -> Kawasaki ZX6R.

Going form the piaggi-slow to the XR125 wasn't THAT noticeable. It produced 100%+ more power since i was realistically going from 3-5bhp to 9-12bhp. Noticed the extra torque everywhere but didn't notice the top speed. My NRG topped out at 45-55mph on the clocks and the XR topped out at 60-70mph on the clocks- 20mph is hardly noticeable when you don't have the power.

From there, i went onto the ZXR250 - again a leap of 200%, going from 10bhp to 40ish bhp. Instant go everywhere, and because i was on a 4 cylinder, it had the powerband kicking in at 8k! Gosh that took some getting used to. It was a rush! Now i could manage to beat cars up to 70mph and top out at 100-105mph. It was rapid.

Roll on the ZX6R - double the power and possibly double to triple the torque. I now got used to the IL4 power delivery, but wasn't that frightened. The bends came up faster and you needed to brake harder than on the 250 since it couldn't carry the same corner speed, but honestly the CC gap must also take into consideration engine configuration and power delivery.

When i was riding on my 125 and had a go on SmotoBob's butched KLR650 - that produced 40 odd bhp - same as my zxr250, but a helluva lot more torque and power delivery was different. THAT scared the shit out of me. I had a go on a 1989 CBR600 too just after i passed my test on still on my 125 and THAT scared the shit out of me.

I guess after going on 600's, you'd get used to seeing the scenery going past quicker. I've yet to try a thou or a V twin, but it should be "something different" to say the least.

and then...VFR400 - GS500 - XJ600S.....not much of a jump between them really.

RV125 (12bhp), DAS - ER-5 (48bhp), XF650 (47bhp), DL1000 (105bhp)

The scariest was opening the ER-5 up on an NSL dual-carriageway, it felt so quick I struggled to hold on and change up.

The jump then to the XF from the RV was as Shaggy said a relief, I felt I was on a level field with the other traffic, though it was much better than that.

Moving to the DL I thought I might die but realistically I've been no where near it's maximum abilities. I love it as I've loved them all but strangely I miss the XF the most as it was the most fun, I have to be so steady and controlled on the DL, I can't afford to make a mistake, again... Laughing

RXS100 (12bhp) >>> XJ600S Divvy (60bhp...or so)

Not a scary jump really because the Divvy is a very novice friendly bike, but definitely a welcome power boost, especially on A roads and motorways. Having decent lights and brakes was flippin great too, although it took a while to get used to the handling difference. The RXS100 was so light and flickable that you only had to think and it changed direction. The XJ was a heavy, stable beast that took some real effort to chuck into corners.

XJ600S Divvy >>> CBR600FR (90bhp... or thereabouts?)

600 to 600 not a big jump huh? WRONG! This was a massive change. The CBR6 was lighter and vastly more responsive in every gear. Within 15 minutes of picking it up I had gone into three figures on the speedo completely by accident (no, really). I overtook some cars, looked down at the speedo and was very surprised. You could break the ton on the Divvy, but it took effort, this was just ridiculously easy.
The brakes were also much more powerful. The single disk on the Divvy did the job, but the CBR6 was just at a different level. Again within a week of owning the bike I inadvertently pulled a massive stoppie trying to pull over rapidly to answer my mobile. I came to a stop, went to put my feet down and the ground wasn’t there... then CRASH, the back wheel came down... numpty.

CBR600FR >>> CBR954RR FireBlade (supposedly 152bhp, I assume at the crank)

Another big change. The Blade felt fairly familiar after ten years on the CBR6 in terms of the way it handled, but the riding position is a lot more extreme. Then there’s the power. People say they felt it was hard to hang on with some step-ups, the this was definitely the case with the Blade. A slightly slippery seat in combination with new textile trousers meant I was shoved to the back of the seat every time I opened the throttle with any enthusiasm. I haven’t fitted a steering damper yet and the bike will waggle the bars under hard acceleration in almost any gear.

I ride everyday year round and the bikes all still have the ability to surprise me. I’ve ridden loads of other bikes over the years, but these are the only four that I’ve owned long term. I still have a RXS100 and the CBR6, although I plan to sell the RXS this spring and prep the 600 for track use.

Very Happy

CG125, felt quick off the line even compared to my car.

Then onto a GS500 for my DAS, and that felt very fast, actually threw you back if you accelerated hard on it

Now got a 600 Hornet, still havent dared open it up fully and click through the gears at any sort of speed.
Round town you dont need to, i am too chicken on country lanes, and on the motorway you run out of speed limit after 2nd. Smile

A bike, no matter what size engine will only go as fast as you want it too

Still at the stage where i can amuse myself when a Boy Racer pulls up at traffic lights and thinks he has a chance. Only choice is whether to humiliate them and leave them well behind, or make them think they are sticking with you. Smile
