I've had a search on the forums, but theres nothing that clearly answers my question.

Well, first off I'd like to bring my CG125 back home because my brother has shown an interest in riding it after I've completed my DAS. The only problem is transporting it the 230miles back.
I was thinking about doing the midnight start and hoping to arrive by 6-8am once I have my DAS so I can go on the motorways, but then I thought about towing it up using my bike.

First I looked at getting a trailer, but that seems like it might not work out properly and be just too much of a hassle and expensive to boot to get all the attachments / lights / trailer chassis etc.
So now I'm thinking about attaching it so it rides on its own two wheels.
Could I put some stabilisers wheels on each side of it and tow it just using some rope (or a metal bar with attachment that you would usually connect to a trailer, but instead attach to the forks or something).

What would the potential issues be? Is it really that stupid an idea?

Yes, it is a stupid idea. Rolling Eyes
It would be ok for a few miles, but for 230 miles you haven't got a chance.

Yes its a stupid idea. If you use a rope, the bike behind will continue forward and may pull you off of your own bike. if you use a solid linkage and stabilisers you will not be able to lean your bike.

If you use a solid linkage and no stabilisers, the bike behind will flop into turns and potentially cause you to crash.

Motorcycle trailers have a special universal joint which allows for the motion of the bike. Despite this, I'd never want to risk a trailer that has even been designed for the purpose, as the unknowns are just too great.

In short its a dumb idea, up there with screen doors on submarines, warming your tepid bathwater up with an electric fire in the water and attaching a JATO bottle to the roof of your fiesta.

I don't think it is possible, and if it is possible it probably isn't safe.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Get your brother to get the train/bus up and get him to ride it home if he's passed his CBT?

Or go home and pillion him back up then get him to ride it back?

Or hire a Transit and take it in that if you have a car license?

Is it insured? Get a lift there and ride it back if it is, that's half the fun of biking. If it isn't you will need a van as if your plate is spotted by a ANPR camera say good buy to it.

Looks like its going to be a long ride then Shocked

Although Buellron, sometimes 'stupid' ideas can be implemented with a bit of thought. No need to come out with some sarky comment without even giving a reason.

Have a look in the workshop section for some bodges that people have done (and worked) where you'd probably type the same "Sheesh Wheres the walkin away shaking head in despair smillie".

Just wanted an honest opinion from someone who may have some experience in doing something similar, not some sarcastic comment from some 'funny' naysayer. Thankfully most people gave me some advice

Anyway, nuff of the complaining. Cheers for the advice guys

Not alot i can say to that... Rolling Eyes
Except...
I guess nearly 30 years of building n riding bikes (legally on the road, if you include from when i started riding thats over 35 years!), including chops n rats n all sorts of other bikes, disnae really let me comment eh...
And as fer "Heath Robinson Engineering", im the bloody managing director FFS!!!(If you dinnae aknow what Heath Robinson is....ask?)
But the one thing i dinnae compromise on is safety....thats why im still alive n still able to ride my bikes...
You know reading this n other forums like it scares me sometimes...it really does, just at the complete lack of what used to be called common sence, and its gotta be said self preservation instinct...I suppose yer one saving grace is...You asked the question before going ahead.

Still Scarey non the less

Kind of silly though I have towed bikes before , memorable one was a 918 fireblade who's electrics died on Bodmin ,

Though thinking about it, on motorbikes you are allowed a 100kilo cargo limit, thus you could always partially disasemble it perhaps? ,

a wheel on either side , then the yoke off seat off and put sideways across the back seat, it won't be stable though ,

That will never work. I once strapped my mini moto across the back of my bandit and that was dodgy enough.

I'd lob a CG125 in the back of a hatchback.

Quote:
Trailer Law and Safety

The maximum permitted width of a trailer towed behind a motorcycle in the UK is 100cm.

The maximum all up loaded weight of a trailer must not be greater than 150 KG or two thirds of the towing bikes unladen weight.

The maximum speed permitted whilst towing is 60 mph. All the trailers we sell have been tested to much higher speeds.

Trailers must display full lighting at the rear, i.e. indicators, brake and marker lights.

Loading a trailer affects how stable it is. Always load heavy items near the bottom over the wheels and try to get the hitch weight between
15 kg and 20 kg. Basically, there needs to be more weight at the front than at the back.

Try to load the heaviest items directly over the axle.

Adding weight to any motorcycle either in panniers or in a trailer will increase the stopping distance, so allow extra room when braking.

Learner riders CAN NOT tow a trailer in the UK. A full motorcycle licence is required to do so.

https://www.trealestrailers.co.uk/motorcycle_trailers.php

Proberly the best would be something like a 2 wheeled trailer, that you just drop the front wheel onto. Secure bike down and then rear just rolls along on the ground.
Rather you than me......

Seems a good idea just to bus/train/bega ride down and have a fun filled trip back Thumbs Up

If that comment had been to explain just why this is such a bad idea instead of just to patronise the lad then I'm sure it would have been more than welcome.

Once again despite your vast age and experience you seem to have forgotten that those who are just setting out on their biking life need help and guidance from the likes of you, not sarcasm and rolling eyes. If you are so cynical or jaded that you don't wish to offer that help then best to keep quiet.

If only we could all roll your years and years on the road into our own short biking lives by some sort of osmosis huh? Rolling Eyes Instead of which we think up our daft ideas and run them by our mates in the hope that they will impart a little of the knowledge they have gained and enrich us with it.

Compare your attitude with someone like Keith or Barry, both of whom are close to your age and have been riding just as long and neither of whom seem to feel it necessary to take the piss when shooting some keen youngster's daft idea down in flames.

Why not just hire a van.

Or buy/borrow a bike trailer.

This is presuming you have a car license.

In 35 years of riding I have been towed one and towed once. Worst things I have ever done on a bike and believe me I have done some stupid things.
Do not do it or you will die.

Are you fucking serious?? Shocked Here's an idea. Go get 2 bicycles, tie one to the other & ride the front one. Do you HONESTLY need to be informed of what the other bicycle is going to do?? even IF it did have stabilizers??

Hi Captain Fun: what the f**k are you on about with bicycles? Have you never dragged a bicycle using a rope (well, I did it years ago using my mountain bike on a bike with stabilisers).
Guess what, the bike moved forwards along with my bike. My younger brother was on the baby bike so he could steer.
Or would that have been too stupid so you spent £300 on the official bicycle towing equipment?

So I just wondered if a metal rod was used then maybe it would remove issues with slack.
