Having just stuffed myself into debt for another few years buying a new-n-shiny, I'm now under pressure (sort of) from my folks to get a decent satellite tracking system for if some organised bunch of scrotes decide to nick it.

What sort of gear exists tailored for bikes, and (more importantly), what are people's opinions on costs/suitability/effectiveness?

I've always been of the opinion that prevention is better than cure. Buy a big lock and chain amd LOCK IT TO SOMETHING, buy an alarm immobiliser, buy a BFO disc lock, if you have a garage then make the door more secure (dead bolts, padlocks, etc etc). Basically make it too much of a pain in the arse to steal your bike. A tracker is £500, you can buy a lot of security that will make it very difficult to steal your bike in the first place for £500.

Regrettably due to where I'm living I've got no options on garaging/ground anchors, but I'm parked off-road with a Thatcham disk lock on the front, Thatcham chain/lock through the rear, and the BMW alarm/immob, all on a bike that by now's probably 260kg dead weight.

I'm just looking to stack the deck, and the 'rents have offered to pay the purchase/install on the tracker if I'm willing to pay the rental...

Search back a few weeks as there was a thread about this subject. Also someone came up with a home made solution.

Biggest issue with a bike is where to hide all the necessary parts for it to work.

Might as well not bother with the chain or disc lock to be honest, if it's not locked to something solid you may as well have no security at all.

It will take at least 2 people to lift a GS into the back of a van and even then they will not be able to move it without the alarm sounding. Ask on UKGS'er, they will tell you of any more options you will have. What they don't know isn't worth knowing. Wink
