Small tacho problem brings up some questions.

Are all tachos the same? As in, my current unit has a 12,000RPM redline, if i got a different tacho with a 12,000RPM redline would it work? I am sort of under the impression that in determining the ratios etc. the important part is the cable, which i have.

To put it in perspective, i have a little YBR125. The original tachos are more than i want to pay really, but i can get one off an SR125 or maybe a TZR125 from ebay for alot cheaper, just solder the relevant wires or something. Will this work?

Most Mechanical tachs have the same ratio as long as you stick to the same manufacturer, but it's no guarantee.

If it's an electrical tach, you should get away with using one from a bike with the same ignition pattern, so you should be fairly successful on a transferring between single cylinder bikes. Again, though, no guarantee.

So how can i tell the difference between a mechanical and electrical unit? The tacho im talking about is "analogue" as it were, not digital. Its the three wires at the back sort of set up, so it is a circuit. Presumably... this is electrical then?

Could be that the cheaper ones are cable driven (rotating wire) and not fed by eletric impulse's.

...it's an electrical one, then. What's inside is basically a frequency to voltage converter with a big analogue voltmeter stuck to the front.

You should have a good chance of it working if you can figure out the connections, which will most likely be 12v, earth, signal from ecu, illumination.
