Following on from the thread on trees Rolling Eyes

Just want to voice an opinion on ethnic diversity: doesn't exist.

I came to De Montfort University in Leicester last September and all i can say is that, Britain, or at least Leicester (most diverse city in UK) is segregated from within. The Whites stick with whites, blacks with blacks and asians with asians.

Proof is in the pudding, some people don't fell comfortable with other races, therefore they look to their own for piece of mind. ( everywhere here)

Pfft, there's nout bad with different races living together.

Good mate on my course is Asian, top man, never think of him as asian though, just one of the lads.

I communicate so much with different races don't think there is a barrier at all.

Saying that they were all born in England, so our cultural values are kind of the same, must admit it is a bit different with people who weren't born here.

Diversity will never work until we can let others be.
And what we do doesn't disturb others.
So it is a dream.

Better to kill all who disagree with you.

Then we will find ways to disagree again.

When we are less human it will be more peaceful.

Being of an "ethnic minority" myself ive seen diversity work and not work. Yes theres areas that groups tend to keep themselves to themselves but theres also areas that it doesnt matter in. Personally i prefer it when it does work, i like hanging round with friends who treat me as just another person, and luckily enough everyone that matters seem to act that way. It surprises and annoys/offends me to an extent that some people still stereotype and treat me like im some sort of foreigner, and I surprise them when i speak in perfectly good english and act like any other 20 something lad. I classify myself as English, i was born and raised here, even when my friends and parents say dont forget your roots etc etc, i state that im an englishman. I've hung round with some other friends in the past and gone to places where we are all ethnically from the far east and felt quite uncomfortable, like why are we segregating ourselves? To me i treat people with the respect that they are my equal unless they prove otherwise.

In a way i guess that the diverse groups, i.e. areas with mixed race etc can be classed as their own little community such as you would with a primarily white, black, asian etc etc

A thing I usually think is that if there were two rooms, one full with people with a different skin colour, different language, different coloured hair or whatever from your own and another where the people share the same characteristics as your own then which room do you walk into?

If a room is full of people speaking Polish and the other full of people speaking English, which do you walk into?

This is exactly what is happening in this country (and many others). People stick with 'their own'. We end up with ghettos of people, so rather than multiculturalism, we end up with multiple segregated cultures. Effectively where the people have chosen to go into the room that is full of people similar to themselves.

This explains white flight. Often the educated anti-racists who speak the loudest end up leaving an area when they start to become the minority (or at least they start to feel like a minority... the difference between actually being a minority and feeling like one is massive).

The only time this really changes is when someone from one culture actively decides to assimilate and meet people from the other culture, or if people from other cultures meet each other doing something where they both share the same interests. eg. Meet someone at a bike meet or something.

Unless these 2 things happen then you end up with the current situation where no one really wants to live with people from the other culture.

The same can apply for anything.

If you lived in a street where everyone was quiet and civilised, much like yourself, then someone moved in who liked to sit outside smoking and just hanging around being a bit messy, then you'd notice them as enjoying different pastimes to yourself.
Then imagine more and more turned up until half the street were sat around smoking and just acting messy then you'd start to think about moving back to people who were quiet and civilised and essentially shared your pastimes.

Surely the laziness sitting around smoking and being messy is just a different 'culture'.

But no, you'd rather move away and go back to living with people who are quiet and civilised like yourself. Whereas more and more people arrive who like to sit around smoking and being messy.

That would make you 'racist' if the other people were Asian, or black or whatever. Even though they may want to do different stuff to you, think some things are acceptable that you don't and despise some of the things you do.

In short - Would you move away from a street that got half full of chavs, but not from a street that got half full of Asians/blacks/whatever. Surely you should treat the chavs just as if they were from another culture and stick around without complaining.
Or is it ok to want to move away from people in a different 'class'?

Its what humans do. We stick around with people like us. Otherwise there would be international CEOs living in Hackney, rather than with other CEOs in some posh Surrey suburb

Also British born and too "essex" for my own good. I still have trouble answering the same old repeated question when I meet a stranger - "where are you from?". I'm getting pretty fed up with trying to work out if they mean, where I live at the present (in England) or where they THINK I come from due to the colour of my skin. Usually I answer rudely.."Essex" and wait for their confused response.
Happened at Hamleys toy store in London. After what seemed a life time of conversation about the weather, how I want my toy gift wrapped....she continued to further my annoyance to the dreaded question above. I would've thought after talking to me for such a long time, she would've figured out from my "essex" accent that I was INDEED british born. I just find it annoying why people need to know where my family originate from. Infact she was the one that had a very strong French accent and she had the cheek to suggest that she thought I WAS FOREIGN and a TOURIST!!

I don't have a problem 'mixing' with different cultures and I don't really see much of a communication barrier with any race. I have friends from all different backgrounds and ethnicities. Hell, I was born in Ilford (united colours of benetton at its peak!)
I do however think that people generally "stick to their kind" as they find common ground in terms of culture and possibly upbringing. Language probably is also something that 'draws us closer' or 'stick together'. I suppose, this is more apparent in Universities since everyone is 'new' and trying to find a safety net or fit into a group comfortably. Most people would find that "sticking to their own kind" would be the easiest option as they are less likely to turn you away, unless your a complete nobend.

No matter how much someone disagrees.......people are always a LITTLE BIT RACIST. I don't mean in terms of hatred racism but stereotypical thinking does sometimes run past our thoughts.
E.g - Jews always seen as tight with cash and maybe not the group to work with in uni as they won't share their work, all asians are doctors or own a corner shop- in uni, their the ones to go to if your laptop is giving you problems, all orientals work in takeaway/restaurants/nail parlour - in uni, the group you attach yourself to, to copy work or at least have links with to help pass your degree.

A lot of people disagree with me right now, but Joe and Kris, please tell me, if you lived in a street where you were the only 'English' person there, would you stick around?

Yes or no answer please.

P.S. No one minds living with a different culture if they move to a country with a different culture.
i.e. If I moved to Sri Lanka then I wouldn't mind being the only white person on my street, wouldn't mind everyone doing other stuff to me.

But when you are in your 'own country' then your average person would want to live with people who are also from that country.
Do you reckon Spanish people would want to live as the only Spanish person in some British expat town?

Do these points make me racist?

Indeed. It is a common thing here in the north to accuse everyone born south of watford of having a cockney accent cos we know it winds em up. Thumbs Up

Seeing as you asked nicely, probably not.

For what it's worth I disagree with the influx of immigrants into this country. I disagree with the 'system' of handouts given to them, meanwhile our old people (including many war veterans) are left to freeze to death in their homes. I disagree with our foreign policies, I disagree with the economic warfare by the world banks destroying foreign economies. I disagree with many, many factors and facets to this argument, especially with how this 'system' works.

That doesn't, however, make me blame the individual immigrants. I can see past them, into the documents and legislation designed and implemented by our governments (and EU) to encourage this population trend. That's where I aim my anger, at the source. Eventually this country will be killed off. Sovereignty is the (stated) enemy of the European Union.

Your quarrel with your neighbour (who may be foreign, although I'm willing to bet they are second/third generation descendants of immigrants) is not a big deal. People buy shitty cars, leave rubbish in their gardens, cut down trees all the time. That's no excuse to generalise and have a pop at them for not being 'English'.

Nah, it's not that. It's the pathetic eye-for-an-eye I've-got-a-daughter-look-I'm-a-changed-man-OI-YOU-FUCKER-I'LL-'AVE-YOU, karma-grubbing-oioi!-i'm-as-original-as-the-stripes-on-my-shirt mentality that makes you a scumbag.

Born & bred Englishman I'm afraid. Consider myself French to some degree as I was more or less raised there for a large chunk of my early life & I'm bilingual, but that's more or less irrelevant to this discussion. You can PM me if you want though and you can hear more of my life story. I'm sure it will be a heartwarming tale of joy and Uncle Lenin will be sure to attend.

Just because you only speak one language doesn't mean everyone else in the world is similarly unilingual. That's a bit of an ignorant assumption, dont'cha think? Thinking
As for why you'd do it...Oh, I don't know. Spirit of fellow man? Change of scenery? Find out if Poles really are money-grubbing evildoers with a grin like Fagin and a pocket like Bill Gates? Start a fight?
