Something i was thinking of riding to work this morning...
At what age do things start to happen?
For example
When am i going to start not understanding young people?
I mean is there an official age range i totally loose touch with the kids?
I pride myself on knowing as much as i can about all sorts, i mean, i can hold my own in many many pub conversations with all ages. I find people who just stare blankly at you when faced with anything but their favorite topics are boring...
Being on the internet almost all day everyday gives me a lot of general knowledge, science, the lastest news, the old news, the things that haven't happend and the things that are happening right now.
It got me thinking though as i know people of all ages, some of them haven't a clue about somethings i think are important to understand and learn about.
Also smaller things like, at what age am i supposed to stop wearing a hoody?
What the hell possess someone to start wearing casual pastel colour clothes?
How did i think of all this in 20 minute commute?

THink I started losing touch with popular culture around three years ago, just after I moved south with the missus, had to concentrate at work and knuckle down a bit for exams. Stopped smoking weed and taking pills at the weekend, sold the decks and generally matured, particulary when we bought our own house.
Having a kid a year ago sets you apart even more, you can't really go out and so aren't exposed to music/hip people etc. I don't listen to Radio 1 anymore, always 5 live, the missus is a Radio 2 junkie!
I'm only 28, but have no real connection (in fact more of an aversion) to modern popular culture. Young people (I mean student & early 20's) I connect less with than I do teenagers, since they seem to have nothing in common with me, but expect that they should if you see what I mean. Teenagers see me as older than them (esp cos I'm a dad), and as such you don't need to align yourself with their 'lifestyle'.
On the other hand, my brother in law is in his late 30's and still partying hard, but then he is single with no children (well none that he takes care of!). Its an attitude thing.
EDIT:
Being on the 'net (and particularly here) is a fantastic tool for exposing oneself to other people's views and culture, who I woudl never other wise interact with. Where else would I interact with a philosiphising ex con, a ferret owning teacher, numerous 16 year olds, a design engineer, a person like guv (can't remember what he does now), a paid up member of the BNP, and a couple of carpet munchers for good measure. Top stuff. |

I turned 24 yesterday, and I stopped going to clubs, listening to boom boom music, or just loud music in general about 2 years ago, In fact I have not even set my stereo up in the last 18 months, just a radio in the kitchen with "imagine FM" on.
I cant stand all that going out getting hammered nonsense anymore, and although I was tempted last night, I stayed in for a quiet evening with the missus and baby, with some birthday cake.
So for me its 22 when I stopped, most of my mates are all in their 30's or 40's these days, all the younger ones I don't see very often due to having different interests. |

I realised how out of touch I already am when I was chatting to my 15 year old sister the other day, I mean there is only a 4 year gap, but everything is changing so quick.
When I was 15 there were just chavs, emo's and goths.
Now there are something called "trendys, sceneboys or something like that" and loads of other things.
Though obviously i'm not that out of touch, music interests are still the same etc, but over the past year I have started becoming more interested in the finer things in life, good wine, nice countryside etc. Think it's because i'm in a long term relationship. Still go out for the good old lash now and then though which is good as it does keep the youth stuck in me. ____________________ Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. I'm 21, and I don't understand most of the youth today.
I have a lot of friends the same age as me, and we generally can talk the the ears off each other especially after some booze, even if it loses its coherency.
I think people find it hard to relate to youth today because, a majority of them don't want to be part of any society, they'd rather take drugs, drink excessively, heckle/mug people, and generally be unsociable.
I work retail in a town center, and I see these kinda kids all the time, loitering, stealing, heckling and generally trying to be intimidating. The reason I don't listen to r'n'b, wear designer shirts, the latest nike trainers and call my friends "bruv", isn't totally because I hate it, it's because If I can help it I'd rather not have any association with these cretins ____________________ ZX6R C6F.

Ah, but were you not the same?
I think back to when I was around 14-15 and I was on my bike with a group of my brothers and friends riding around the streets, cutting up traffic after going on our bike trips up the hills and stuff. I reckon if I were to see myself doing that now, I would think "chav" because I was probably some tracky bottoms and had short hair.
But all we were doing was doing what boys do.
Also, used to go skateboarding. When we walked around old people would cross the road and stuff, even though we were not at all violent. I even remember helping insects that were in trouble and stuff... that's how violent we were
Its like if you ask your parents what they used to do when they were kids it would have been playing out on the street making noise and stuff. And there will have been older people then saying they were young whipper-snappers who were a drain on society.
I'm not condoning all these useless kids walking around doing drugs, getting drunk and being threatening, but I think everyone goes through a stage where they hang out with their friends in parks and stuff. Its what kids do.
When I think back about it properly, we'd do jackass stuff, like if we found a trolley we'd push each other around down hills and stuff. Or for example, I can remember one time where we went to one house and one person knocked whilst everyone else hid. That person would say he arrived for the birthday party, obviously get turned away then leave.
The the next person would go a few mins later and after 5 of us had done it we'd be laughing loads.
If someone did that now, I'd think 'common little chav', but we were just playing around like childish boys with loads of free time.
I bet I sound like a right chav now Trust me, I'm not |

*hugs endless, nameless*
Ill be in touch with you.
haha. Im 19, and I like to think i have a good understanding of a lot of shit. hell, I even understand women pretty well.
*hauls his shield up, and sets it to the "anti gay comments" setting, points it towards BCF*
But, I think for the most part, I dont want to understand someone I dont know. I've done loadsa stupid shit, and I still do, to be fair. But at the same time, I know where a lot of my morals and principles stand now, and I know what I find acceptable (for real) as behavior etc and I know how to act when its needed. But at the same time, a small part of my brain tells me not to conform to behaving how everyone else expects you to behave at certain times. Makes me feel like a sheep. Thats still the "youth" in me obviously. The "adult" in me (no puns thanks...he hurt me ) is becoming more prominent, but not to an extent where I think Im failry boring yet But then again thats a youthful attitude isnt it, that a lot of adults can be boring. Maybe this entire post is invalid because my thoughts are still controlled by the part of me that is the youth.
Or maybe I dont care all that much, but its a very interesting topic Killa. Me likey when people make me think more than -
"How you been?"
"Fine, you?"
"Yeah, not bad."
*tumbleweed*
Cheers man.
EDIT: Sometimes, I like to think of every human being as just that, another thing. Another thing, that isnt specifically anything, and start your thoughts and judgements and whatever from using that base, looking at them respectively and indiviually. Of course, you could just end up seeing a lamb, or a sheep. Bringing you back to the same conclusion. ____________________ "Oh....it looks like Average Joe's is forfeiting the match!" - "Yeah, its a risky strategy but lets see if it pays off for 'em Cotton." |

Been in a three year relationship my friend.
I dont pretend to understand them in the sense of 100%, christ, dont think anyone does. But for fucks sake, theyre women. theyre people, humans, things. They can and have been worked out, if you look at them individually. NOT as a whole though. There's no logic to that whatsoever, but I dont care.
I dont care if anyone thinks Im wrong. I know I understand women my age to some extent, as manipulating them is becoming easier and easier
How old are you Killa?
And Guv, you're what, 24?
I probably will find out fairly suddenly that I completely dont...but Id rather know what I know and have a crack at it then give up and not try.
Even though I KNOW, I will come to the conclusion I dont. But I think its bollocks that we cant understand them, and everyone just goes along with it. Grr.
Its fucking depressing being in the loop of "You think/know you understand/people know you dont understand and tell you you're wrong/you find out you're wrong/you tell other people they dont understand"
Whats even more depressing is that I know Im in the loop, yet still know Im at stage one. I want to break the mould of giving up and telling others they should do the same! Stuff like this can go so deep. ____________________ "Oh....it looks like Average Joe's is forfeiting the match!" - "Yeah, its a risky strategy but lets see if it pays off for 'em Cotton." |
