A long moany post follows, enjoy.
I'm at Plymouth uni, and in Lincolnshire during holidays, so about 250 miles between the two, over Christmas my NSR stopped running, I suspected fuel was the problem and gave the carb a clean, and stuck it back together (badly, the float was very stiff to move) and it still didnt start, since I had to be at uni the next day instead of wasting anymore time fiddling with it I called a local garage to come out and sort it, so I could collect it a few weeks later.
Phoned them two weeks later and he said he though the rings had gone, and that he'd phone when he got the cylinder off to see.
Phoned him three weeks after that (last wednesday) and he said that it was the carb, and it was running fine now. Since I'd just passed my test I decided to come and collect it then give it a top end rebuild when it was home.
So 9 hours of public transport in full leathers later and I have the bike, runs fine, I ride it back fairing and seatless and remember why I love this bike, despite it only having 20 odd horses, pull into my drive and it's pissing coolant out the radiator, as well as this I also reminded myself the indicators have gone
Pop back to the garage and have a chat, work out it is the radiator leaking, ratjer than a loose pipe feeding leaked coolant onto it. Come home and be depressed a bit, decide to try to get the crashed NTV rideable, it has a dead battery, half attatched clip ons very leaky forks and is generally in a bit of a state, I whipped out the old battery, making a note of how the terminals are the opposite way round to the NSRs, so what do I do? Go in for a cuppa and immediatly attatch the NSR battery terminals the wrong way round, which the least it will of done is killed my fuse, much more likely-ly it'll of fucked my (very bodged) loom generally, I'm using the technical tense of the word 'fucked' there btw.
I also discovered the gearbox is completely mashed (she was stuck in neutral, so I pushed her out the garage, played with it and got her stuck in gear, with no clutch cable attatched, so I had to half lift her back into the garage,) so the NTV is now basically worthless, and will be sold for parts, wheras working she'd be a fine 3-400 quid hack for someone.
so the NTv is unridable, I turn my attention back to the NSR, looking at the indi bulbs none ar burnt out, so I try the NTV's flasher relay on it (the NTV's says ford on it btw) and still nothing, so given the tools and knowledge I have I wont be able to get the indis working before monday (when I need to get back to Plymouth.)
I'm not going on the motorway with no indis and an engine which is overdue a rebuild and has no coolant, so I'm going to have to get a train back, in my leathers again. And the NSR wont sell for more than the cost of a rebuild and a second hand radiator, so I may as well break her too.
what a shit weekend, 200 quid on trains, 70 quid fixing a tiny problem with my carb and now I have no bikes just a massive pile of scrap metal. I had my eye on a nice looking CBR400, but I really dont want to go for it now, since I was planning on selling the NSR and NTV to fix any potential problems with it, but now I only have enough for the sale price, but nothing extra, and given my luck this far I'm thinking it'd be better to give it a miss
Anyone got a bike that'll work forever for 750 quid?

Just ride without indis? I have been doing for some time now. Doesn't make much of a differnce, your intentions are usually very clear.
Mine have bulbs in all of them, just a wire gone somewhere, But I'll be fucked if I'm going to rip into a loom with my very limited knowledge.
If I have a smash, whos to say the indis weren't working but then stopped after the impact?

I rode it indi-less up here no problem, only time it really has an effect is when turning right on a roundabout, in any other situation I just made extra allowences. However it took me two days to get up here via none motorways (on a CBT) I dont want to be indiless on the motoway on a bike thats likely to seize at any moment.
A look on ebay shows that radiators arent quite as expenisive as I expected though, and there is actually a CB500 I was looking at a while ago ending in a few hours, I think if I can get it for under 550 that'll leave enough for half the consumables, so I'm in a slightly better mood.
It was funny actually, leaving the garage for the second time, a car came to a halt abruptly in front of me (learner driver managed to stall doing about 20 odd. I was about to carry on past when I noticed a car directly to my left was pulling out at a high speed without having looked into the road ahead!! I had a very clear cut choice of being hit or not, sort of wish I'd stayed still now |

You killed an NTV? , those things are virtually indestructable (if couriers are taken out of the equation),
Buy a better NTV , NTVs are incredibly hardy machines , though if you are interested there is a Honda Dominator which is very reliable such that couriers use them (and very basic single) for £700 off a mate of mine in Bury. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. Aye, the NSR will probably get sold over easter, as runner with a new rad and top end rebuild. As for the NTV I'll stick it on ebay as a shit bike for spares, with a first bid of £200, if I get that I'll be happy to get it carted out of my life, The front mudguard is broken in half, the forks are shagged and have pissed out all their oil over the months its been stood, I need a set of clocks, the block and carbs'll need draining of the stale petrol, and the carbs'll need cleaning, the gearbox isn't a gearbox anymore, and there are lots of scratches down the frame and a big dent in the tank.
Since I've already spent the best part of 100 quid replacing the bent cycle parts I cant really see it ever turning a profit, if I get bored over summer and no-one wants it as parts, it may become a trampy hack.
I do however need to change the title of this thread, cos of my new moneypit

It definatly is. I thought the poor old Gix4 got sold anyway? I would of been interested if youd asked me this morning.
And Itchy, the thought "oh my god I killed an NTV" did go through my head earlier today, I crashed it about 6 months ago, and have always just sort of had this "it'll be a hack when I can be arsed to sort it" thought lingering at the back of my mind, but the gearbox is utterly fucked and the loom smells of burnt plastic. |
Although there is animosity between us Sickpup has/had a NTV complete loom, it should be an easy fix that, also if the gear box is mashed maybe you can stick a Bros 650 gearbox on it and swing arm?, should cost you less than £100 to mod it like that.
The problem with the NTV's gear box is that its complicated by the shaft joint, you can borrow me Haynes if you want.
But if you are breaking her, first dibs on parts. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will. In the end, your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching. |
