Hi all,

As a few of you may know im going for my acu licence on the 24th at brands. Ive just found out i need a oil catch tray. Ive spoken to wheel power (my local aprilia dealer) and they cannot get one in before sunday. Also, its about £200 (comes with racing fairing). I will buy this once i have the money, but for the 24th i need to make my own. I have all the fibreglassing kit etc but im not too sure what this catch tray has to do. I know it is to catch oil from the sump etc, but what does it look like and what specs do i have to work from. If anyone has any pictures i can work from it would be brilliant. Doing this is the difference between going on the 24th or not getting there.

Thanks all. You are always here to turn to. Thumbs Up

At a guess I would imaging to be effective a catch tray would need to be capable of catching/containing all the oil in a bike eng/G-box in the event of a catastrophic failure. And would need to wrap around to some degree.
Just a guess.
I never race you see. Never met any competition... Cool

What bike are you racing and who has told you that you need a catch tray?

You should check the tech regulations for whatever class you're entering - 2 strokes often don't require a catch tray cos they don't dump oil and coolant all over the track when they blow up.

If you *do* need one, the regulations will give you the specifics. You used to have to have plugs in them which would be removed to let water out in a wet race but last year this was changed so they have to be sealed. If they've any sense, they've changed this back. Rolling Eyes

Its my RS, I spoke to the tech guy today. He is the one who told me what i needed for my bike. So could i get away with just a tray that wraps around the sump and fixes onto the existing fairing?

Cheers

Erm Confused.. did he tell your RS125 needs a catch-tray, or just that a bike does?

As far as I know, 2 strokes don't require catch trays, what with having a lot less oil less likely to dump it's self on the track.

Subsection 5 paragraph 4

"You are not allowed to fart and ignite it while a race is in progress to gain rocket propulsion like speed boosts" Laughing

On a serious note for the catch tray, i made one once for a friend i found a roasting tray that was near enough the right size to suit his bike i welded on brackets for it to meet the mountings and such on his bike... Then used it as a mould to make a fibreglass model from Smile took about 3 hours of work saved around £100 and it done the job beautifully, it came up just belowe flywheel casing and clutch casing on either side and we put like a deflector plate of plastic at the back to stop anything spraying out the engine straight to the back wheel Smile.

But im with Bendy check the rules and regulations for the class your racing in as you will be amazed some of the things you can find out Smile

Rolling Eyes Just spoke to a different guy and he just said that i DIDNT need a catch tray as it is a 2 stroke. I still need a sharks fin and other mods etc. Does anyone know any good sites to get a sharks fin of? Ive tried egay but to no avil. Wheel power can order me one in but id rather just order one myself.

Thumbs Up

You can easily enough make yourself a shark's fin.

Otherwise, try A&R racing or Rod Hardwin - I reckon google should provide you links to their sites.
