Hi all,

I have come across a Suzuki Bandit for sale and am interesting in taking on as a project. I have previously owned a Gilera Runner 125 and a GSXR600.

The bike has 40K Miles on it and I would look to do it up in terms of headlights, etc to use as a commuter and in the long term maybe a cheap trackday bike.

I will be viewing the bike in the next couple of days, what should I be looking out for in terms of damage, etc?

Secondly can anyone recommend a good site for mod parts?

Cheers

Dan

Mods are very rare for the bandit 400, you could get the usual mini indicators, new can etc but i've not found any mods.

If you want to use it for a commuter bear in mind it's not the best for fuel economy, I get around 38mpg.

When buying one I'd check all the gears select and work properly (during a test ride if you can), check the rear shock as these are generally getting old these bikes now and it may be shot. Also check brake discs for grooves and min thickness (it should say on them), check brake pads, chain and sprokets, tyre wear, bearings, charging circuit. Also check for any snaps in the footrest hangers, rattles in the engine and look on the end of the can to see if there's any soot build up - this could indicate it's running rich.

If you search "buying a used bike" or something along those lines on a search engine there's a 30 odd page guide somewhere that lists and goes in to detail of everything to check. It's not bike specific though.

I listed all the problem's i've had with my bike.

Edit: Just found out that powerbronze do a bellypan, never knew! No idea what it looks like though, as their website only shows an example picture.

The bandit400 is a bit of a screamer, having basically the same engine as a GSXR400. With 40k miles on one I would expect the engine to be well into it's autumn years. It might be fine for many miles to come but equally it could be on it's last legs, so pay special attention to how it feels and sounds.

Very little ground clearance too IIRC so track days is out of the question unless you mod the rear sets.

the only main fault i have heard of of the 400 bandit is on the 400 vvt(variable valve timing) is with the valve gear failing or being a nightmare to work on..but this model is a rarity! Thumbs Up

I've recently started doing up my 400...
Was all red... Now shiny black..
Looks lovely...

Had dominator headlights on it, mini indicators, changed rear fender to the smaller japanese version, going to get the dominator windscreen for the dual headlights to cover the clocks...
Belly pans are available for the bandit... saw them on some mod site, cant remember which one now.

Also a company in Germany called 'Gimbel' do some aftermarket stuff for the 400. Including a single seat conversion cowel.

Unfortunately their site is in german! Click for Site

See my project photo's for the bandit in my facebook album:

Or in the South East Brothers Motorcycle Group Forum:

Hope this helps![/url]
