Arse. In case any of you didn't know play.com and cdwow.com were facing legal action because they've been selling imported cd's cheaply. CDWow just gave in and so their prices will now rise by £2~3 each.

How long till play.co goes the same way?

Bastards. Its not like its even illegal.

Hi

Unfortunatly due to the abuse of the European trade mark laws by the official importers it probably is illegal (same as parallel import bikes from outside Europe).

My view is that there is little that can currently be done to get round this legally at the moment. However it does seem that by taking this action the official importers have pretty much admitted that they are running an illegal monopoly. Think the penalty for that is a fine of up to 10% of turnover of the company. Hopefully someone will have the bottle to go for the recording industry like this and teach them to stop ripping people off.

Should do p2p networks a world of good though.

All the best

Keith

You can order at the cheap rate from cdwow until Sunday.

It is truely pathetic, and all the more nauseating when you know what the dealer prices for some of those CDs. Rolling Eyes

The record industry is broken and they are really going to have to get off their arses and accept that - trouble is it's still run by people who made their money selling round pieces of plastic. Time to wake up and smell the coffee - music is a consumable these days, it needs to be treated differently to the way it has before. The concept of the 'territory restriction' is dead and businesses and goverments have to get their head around this.

One of the greatest things about the internet is the way it opens up the whole world as a shopping centre so you can sit and browse a DVD store in Canada that's really cheap cos of the exchange rate, you can get a Portugese release of a British-made film from an ebayer in Brazil if you don't want to wait and see if the UK will ever release it... the whole region coding thing as an attempt to stop people importing DVDs failed miserably, surely this proves something Question

End of not-terribly-coherant rant. Smile

God forbid that we can buy anything at a fair price! Rolling Eyes

I like the following quote from them:

Quote:
Music industry insiders said they were delighted with the result. "It is not the consumer that will suffer, just CD Wow's profit margins. They made a lot of money out of cheap CDs," one insider said.

Apparently this price increase will only affect the cost of the CDs, DVDs should be unaffected. This is because it was the record companies who were starting the legal proceedings.

It's still bad news but could be worse!

Sounds like they are somehow implying that imported CD's are inferior/shoddy. I have a number of imports and they often have more/better tracks on them than the UK ones!

Cr@ppy record companies!

I would like to point out to any members of the forum who work for record companies that I like Sanctuary records cos they have Halford, Maiden and our friend Brucie on the books, so I might let them off! Smile

All my cd's are from CDWOW, and none are shoddy, exactly the same as the EU ones; but £8-£10 less Rolling Eyes

But aren't Play.com (and dvd.co.uk) based in Jersey or something? And doesn't that exempt them a lot of the red tape?

On a slightly different note - it's interesting to see Argos selling all new PS2 games for £29.99, whereas everywhere else still sells them for about a tenner more.

I'll tell you exactly what's going on here. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The government has done a bit of sniffing around, and discovered that more and more people are buying CDs and DVDs (and other stuff) off the net because they're cheaper than going to HMV for the exact same thing.

Said government, somewhat miffed by their findings, decided to give internet retailers a solid kick up the arse and ordered them to bring their prices in line with with their high street counterparts, or burn in the fires of hell.

The result is that we pay higher prices, and more VAT goes to the government. Makes no difference to the retailer because we're the ones footing the bill. The only people that lose, is the public. The only winners, are the government.

See if I vote for this shower of bastards again. Confused
