While pondering my trip to oz in a few years (after college) I was wondering what do people think the costs would be to drive from the west coast to the east coast of Australia? Also how hard is it to get insurance etc in oz on a uk licence?.

Cheers muchly.

I once took the greyhound bus from Perth to adelaide, it only took a mere 38 hours. Stopping only for 10/20mins every 4/8hrs.

the stretch across the nullabor eyre highway is around 2700km alone

adelaide - melbourne is a 12hr bus ride
melbourne - sydney is a 12hr bus ride too

Done Melbourne to Cairns on a bus but it was a tourist bus and that took 12 days! although I split it over 3 months.

Would love to do a ride like from Perth to Sydney, but I'm slightly concerned about how dull the roads will be. Although if you take the coast there will be some fun sections, but it will take alot longer.

Tbh if I was going to do a bike ride in Oz I'd do Adelaide to Cairns... Much more of the population on that trip with lots to see and do. Without the worries of finding petrol stations etc. Had a few scares myself when we hired a car and headed into the back and beyond of Oz, must have to be fairly cautious on a bike...

Take plenty of money, because if your hoping that gaining a temporary working visa, will enable you to earn enough money to support your travels thru OZ, your in for a rude awakening. As you`ll probably fall flat on your face, skint, and heading back on the plane within a few months.

been there, done that ............

Could you elaborate on that?
As I'm riding to Australia next year and once I get there I plan on getting a working visa and making at least a little cash (though if it doesn't work out I'll still have the cash to support myself).
What's the issue? Finding the work? The wages? The Accomodation?

hi mate i'm currently travelling through oz with a few mates. We've bought ourselves a car and have so far done syd-mel-adel-alice springs-dawin-cairns-brisbane. All that cost me a$2500 dollars (not including buying the car) and took about 6-7 weeks. It's 12-13000 km. Petrols cheap out here. What i would reccomend you do is hire a campervan a$30 a day and just drive. means you can sleep in the van. IT's pretty much the cheapest way of travelling. If you want more information contact me at hitchcock.alistair@gmail.com and i'll help you out.
