Hi
From a site I found.
Quote:
It all started in the sunny town of Bridgend in the UK. One of my mates said to me, "How do you fancy going to the Superbikes in Assen?"

Ever since watching Dumb and Dumber I thought that Assen was a ski resort so I wasn't so sure. I asked around and heard good reports so later agreed. After reading diferent bits and pieces in magazines and from what they said in my local bikeshop, I became more and more excited. I was so excited that my misses said that I cared more about going to the Superbikes in September than I did about getting married in July. That was open to debate.

The time came. It was the begining of September and we had to move fast. The ferry had to be booked and the bike had to be made reliable. First stop was my local dealer. Thunder Road. They were voted number one in RIDE's recent servey and this was to be the test. I was to ride a Suzuki SV650S. The other guys were on a Yamaha R6 and two Kawasaki ZX9's. I could not afford to be let down.

For me, the journey started on Thursday the 6th of September. I made my way along the M4 into London. By the time i got there, the rucksack on my back felt like it weighed a ton. I knew i should have taken my soft panniers.

In London I met up with Julian. We had arranged to have a quiet pint and a curry. That was the plan but it went down hill quite rapidly. Eight pints of Premier later, i had the feeling that we weren't going to get on that ferry.

Next morning the back was still in a bit of pain as well as the head. The cargo net was dug out and the rucksack strapped to the back seat. It was then head down and arse up as we made our way down to the Dover ferry port.

On meeting up with Dai and Paul, we realised that they were professionals at touring. Their kit looked so tidy on the backs of the ZX9's that it looked like their mothers had packed it.

Into France it was easy. The plan for me was to just try and keep up with the others. The plan for the others, try and get through the traffic without using the hard shoulder. I succeeded and they failed. It was all good fun right up to the last stop. but we were all more than ready for that stop.

We pulled into Breda and unpacked the tents. Thats when me and Julian realised just how un-prepared we were. Dai made us all a brew before we made our way into the town to sample the night life.

What can I say? Strange place or what? The only thing missing from the bars were the banjo's. There were banjo players everywhere. As soon as we walked out of the restaurant people just stopped and stared. It might have been the fact that it was freezing cold and Paul was wearing shorts, but i got the feeling that it was more than that.

Following a drunken photo shoot and a wrestling match that ended in two of us falling into a Dutch hedge, we made our way back to the campsite. After a good nights sleep it was onwards and upwards. Assen here we come.

As we got into Assen, we made our way to the campsite and made use of the wet muddy field to practic our burnouts. Next job was to put up the tents. This wasn't so easy when the ground already had an inch of water on it. Tents up and time to go to the Superpole. Dai knew a short cut or so he said.....

“Follow me” he said. And there we were, in the middle of a field up to our knees in water. We could see the track and hear the bikes but do you think we could get there. The answer – No.

On the way back it was time to sample some of the Assen larger. Horrible stuff but the more you drank the better it got. After six pints it was time to eat. It was back to the campsite and quick change. It was obvious that Assen is never that busy because it felt like we were waiting for the taxi for over an hour. A bit of advice if you ever decide to go to the World Superbikes in September – Take a jumper. It was freezing. We ended up in a small Chinese restaurant and topped up on our beer level. The food was first class. Stuffed with food and drink, we made our way into the square were we enjoyed the live music and nutters doing burnout’s. The atmosphere was brilliant. The beer was flowing, we had live music and best of all, there were patio heaters all over the place. The drinking went on throughout the night. I say throughout the night, what I really mean is that we were drinking until they turned the patio heaters off.

Next morning it was time to go to the racetrack. We took no chances and went the opposite way to what Dai said. We found it. What a day. The beer was flowing, the weather was okay and the racing was brilliant. The great thing about the Assen track is that it could be raining at one end and dry at the other. Fortunately we were at the dry end.

After the racing we just weren’t thinking straight. Paul was the first over the fence and what a laugh that was. The fence decided to catapult him off but wanted to keep hold of his shorts tearing a big hole.

Over the track we went and there we were right in the middle of it. The Superbikes, the Superbike riders and the Superbike dolly birds. The camera was working overtime. We met up with Colin Edwards, Troy Corser, Tadayuki Okada, Ruben Xaus, Peter Goddard and Supersports Karl Muggeridge. They were all great and the only let down was Troy Bayliss who could not even spare two minutes for a photo shoot.

Whilst we waited for Bayliss it got cold. Sod it we thought, we need more beer. We headed off to the campsite and when we got there, we had a taxi waiting. It was quick change and out.

Same place as the night before and this time the food was even nicer. Dai was feeling the strain. His old age was obviouly catching up with him as he tried to sneak off at about ten thirty. Eagle eyed Paul caught him but there was no stopping Dai, he had to go as the preasure of seeing the winners cup had made him feel tired and he was feeling home sick. The night was young for the rest of us. We took over the local pub with songs like yellow bird and cwm by ar. Sad I know but when you are full of Dutch larger and everyone else is joining in, it is a good laugh.

At the end of the evening (early morning) we bumped into a couple from the local military base. I won't go into detail too much but when lads have not seen much skirt for a couple of days there are big sums of money on offer.

Getting back to the site at 3.30 a.m. wasn't one of our best ideas. Paul faggot to open the zip to get into the tent and made quite a big hole in the zip. Dai was not going to be happy but he was out for the count.

Next morning we were awoken at 9 am with Dai revving his bike. He had obviousl had a good nights sleep and was ready to get into Amsterdam. We weren't. That's when the vomit came up. Strange, I didn't remember eating carrots.

Half past one that afternoon, we decided that it was time to get up. The previous nights activities had obviously taken it's toll on three of us. We were nackered.

In Amsterdam we found our hotel nearly straight away. Dai and Paul had stayed there before and it was in an ideal location to visit the sights. It was great just to have a decent shower let alone to lie down on a proper bed.

Amsterdam was an eye opener. They were models. I didn't have a dable although I was quite tempted. Next morning was when the real problems began. Jullian had bought so much porn that he could not fit it into his bag. He managed eventially and we were off. The rain hampered things a bit and when me and Julian lost Paul and Dai, that's where we started to panic. We ended up in Brussels. Nice place but we didn't want to be there. we missed the ferry. I could not believe it. Gutted. It was going to be a long ride back to Wales on my own and in the dark

Sounds like a laugh Very Happy.
