Last weekend i took my NSR down to bike mechanics because she has been sounding a little dodgy lately and was told that i will have to have an engine rebuild soon Sad

I just wondered if you guys were going to buy a new bike would you steer clear of bikes that have had an engine rebuild?

Aaaaand thats not it i went to go and ride her home on my lunch break and the battery was flat...i only changed it 3 days ago so surely it shouldn't have run down already.

Sounds completely gay but i actually cried at work today...its been one of those weeks and my bike had just pushed it, i couldnt even get any lunch Crying or Very sad

On 125 2 strokes buying a bike that has just had an engine rebuild is a good thing. Just make sure there is a receipt.

Things will look up in the future, don't worry too much, it is afterall only a bike.

Depends what kind of bike i was buying, if i was buying a 2stroke and itd just had a rebuild i definantly consider it, as a sweetening point. as 2strokes need rebuilding its fact..

Not sure about 4 stroke engines...

If the battery was flat, mate you could of just bumped the bike, stick it in first, run along with it and drop the clutch out!

and we all have weeks that things get on top of us!

How much does a engine rebuild usualy cost?

Dont want to make you cry further, but a engine rebuild for my bike would of cost me between 200-400 pounds..

Nsr's are a piece of piss to bump.

Push it along in neutral, jump on, drop into first and drop the clutch/your arse on the seat at the same time.

I only push it along in neutral as my clutch doesn't seem to work without the engine running Confused

Yea i could always bump my old 50 no problems because it was light as a feather and was really crappy so i was never scared of dropping it.

AHHH i have just paid for a holiday...crap!

Does an engine rebuild make a huge change to the bikes performance?

An engine rebuild will bring your compression up to around 200psi.

I don't know what it is now but you will feel a performance difference.

If its a top end rebuild
if effects top end power in every gear, so ye, or it might just blow completely but either way its better to take preventative measures than ones after the damage right?

Thats exactly why i'm hesitant to ride it just incase it does go KABOOOOOM then obviously i will be paying out more.

I used to love taking my bike out but now i am so parranoid listening for every dodgy sound and worrying if my bike does blow up on me.

Has any of you guys ever been riding along and had your bike blow up on you?

How do they know it needs an engine rebuild? do you know the history of the engine i.e how long it has been since it had a top end rebuild? Don't worry about it, a top end rebuild on a two stroke is just routine maintenance! It probably only needs a piston and rings if the compression is down, a competant mechanic will be able to do that in an afternoon very easily.

Just don't let them take you for a ride 'cos I know what some of them are like with females! Thumbs Down

Is there nobody that you know the has the skills to do it for you. If you have a friend that you could buy a crate of beer or something I'm sure they'd be happy to do it for you.

You don't have the worry of a mechanic ripping you off then.

There used to be a guy at my mechanics that used to do all work on my bike for close to nothing because when i used to walk back from pizza hut i would bring him over pizza...but he has now left so i am a trusting mechanic down.

hmm looks relatively straight forward to me, as Stinkwheel says when a 4 stroke engine dies you only open it up to have a goosie as to how many parts are in it,

But as said thats just to me though, and I have become a relatively compentant mechanic from just having a go.

Well first line of call is to,
Grab the yellow pages or go to www.yell.com
put in motorcycle repair in the search box then fill in your location, print out/save the list of phone numbers for companys on there, and phone them all up,

get quotes for a top end rebuild, remember to state its a 2stroke and the bike model etc.

price up whos cheapest,
then go from there on in.

I'd guess Sickpup from what he said.

Real easy job, with a bit of time you could do it yourself....
Cheap for NSR's too, self top end rebuild cost me about £70-80 in parts and an NSR should be similar.

Maybe see if any south end BCF'ers can help you?
