You take 3 shots from exactly the same position with 3 different exposures and merge them together...

for the best effect it's probably best taking 3 photo's using a good camera, if you only have 1 photo then go in photoshop and alter the exposure that way, then save 3 photo's and mix them into Photomatix.

hmmm i might just ride to somewhere random with my paddock stand on my back and take some photos 
all a bit too contrived if you ask me,
oh im ace, ive got a cool bike. shall i go for a ride??? nah ill just take some photos of it instead, load it on the truck boys.

once it's made your photo McGee, click on HDR then go on Tone Mapping, the majority of the effect is done from there
