parking for bike in london

heard on the news today chelsea and kensington council and going to increase motorcycle parking by 70% as a result of increased people on bikes due to the congestion charge.

finally one council that wants to do the right thing, all ive ever heard is london wants to charge bikes in the cc or make them pay to park and reduce bays

Don't want to hijack your thread, but I have a question on London parking

I have a mate who lives in Islington. I want to ride my bike over there and park, but I understand I need a permit or something and then on top of that pay per day??

He also lives just across the street from the Hackney ward, so is that any different? I just want to turn up, chain my bike to one of those bike fence things and then be done with it. No administration bull shit

I'm just checking now, but I guess that means if I see one of those bays where it has a fence and allocation for motorcycles, I don't need a permit or anything? I can just turn up, lock up and be on my way?

But that leaves me in another tangle. I'm genuinely scared about having my bike nicked in London. Don't know what advice I could get other than "Get a good chain and hope for the best". How do residents live just having their bike chained up on the street in London?

EDIT: Nice, I've just read that motorcycles can park in ANY parking space in Hackney? (as long as they park correctly etc). Is this true, as there are feck all motorcycle specific bays around.

Yes, that's true.
There a re a bunch of boroughs* like Hackney which allow you to park in any space for free (even including resident permit spaces).
Not all boroughs though so you need to make sure which you're in (look at the parking info signs which should have the name of the borough on them).

Near where I work there's a street where there are thousands** of bikes parked on one side of the road because it falls under Hackney, and none parked a few metres away on the other side because it falls under Islington.

In Islington you are only allowed to park free in dedicated Solo Motorcycle bays (clearly marked with those words painted on the road).

If you let me know exactly where you'll be I can look in my recently purchased London Bike Guide (which has locations of all bike bays in London mapped out) for a bay nearby.

i cant see how they would enforce parking payments. where can you securely put a pay and display on a bike? you cant even leave a bike alone in london for too long without it going walkies let alone a parking receipt!

Just a heads up... I rang up Islington Council and they said I was free to park my bike in the dedicated bike bays. No permit required, no pay as you go rubbish.

I'm not sure how that links with other boroughs, but it was news to me. Everywhere I read made it seem at least as if it couldn't be done for free.
