Can anyone tell me what the alphabet designations on French roads mean, if anything?
I'm thinking that maybe As are like our motorways then they go down in quality as they go up the alphabet but that's just based on how wide they are an on my google map........
Also any road signs to look out for that are substantially different to ours?
Only a week to go. Eek. ____________________ Sod falling in love, I wanna fall in chocolate. |

A roads = motorways , usually toll but those around cities like Paris and the one from Calais towards Belguim are free for a bit. 2 lanes and a shoulder get bigger near cities , almost always by pass cities = fast , but expensive.
N Roads = route nationale , think A roads in the UK crossed with dual carriageways , also pretty fast but go through towns where you lose speed. But hey I managed to top out my bike on those roads a few times.
E roads = European route, which is pretty much the same as N roads,
You get roads in between too though.
Navigation is different , if you want to go to a town , look for several towns further a foot than the target town as signs will lead to them.
I say something about the colour of signs in my tour post last year, I forget which colour though. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die.
