Can anyone tell me what the alphabet designations on French roads mean, if anything?

I'm thinking that maybe As are like our motorways then they go down in quality as they go up the alphabet but that's just based on how wide they are an on my google map........ Embarassed

Also any road signs to look out for that are substantially different to ours?

Only a week to go. Eek.

A roads = motorways , usually toll but those around cities like Paris and the one from Calais towards Belguim are free for a bit. 2 lanes and a shoulder get bigger near cities , almost always by pass cities = fast , but expensive.

N Roads = route nationale , think A roads in the UK crossed with dual carriageways , also pretty fast but go through towns where you lose speed. But hey I managed to top out my bike on those roads a few times.

E roads = European route, which is pretty much the same as N roads,

You get roads in between too though.

Navigation is different , if you want to go to a town , look for several towns further a foot than the target town as signs will lead to them.

I say something about the colour of signs in my tour post last year, I forget which colour though.

Are you sure you don't mean the same as French A roads?

Usually French autoroutes (A) roads also have an E road number in the atlas. Think the idea was that unlike Britain many autoroutes pass into other European countries, so that while the national number might change the E number stays the same as you pass into Belgium/Italy etc.
