Mate had a spill do i still go for my test.

I have not sat my full test but my mate has been riding for 2 years. I have always liked bikes but wife always said no. But after seeing my face on the back of my mates she said ok. So i have sat my cbt and going for my main test when you get that phone call you dont want to here today.

Basically he was following his wife to the petrol station on a back road on a GSX 750 f when he thinks he hit a bit of gravel then high sided him into a fence. Breaking upper arm both bones in lower arm and both bones in lower leg and dislocated his other arm. Bike I would presume is a right off. He spilled at what he reckoned was 30-40 miles an hour. He is ok I suppose. He has just left theatre and has to go down again as they still need to fix his arm. They have put pins and plates in his leg as well as his arm.

I am sitting typing this and I have just received an email about a bike i was watching on Ebay and was about to tell the boy I wasnt interested and the wife said just get it. So I suppose that answers my question.

Some things like the highside on gravel, can't be easily avoided, you only think of how you could of avoided it after you've already spilled.

If you want a safer bike to ride get a BMW the R1150GS monster trailies have ABS, a weird front end you can feel nothing through and is the bike of choice for gravelly / slippery roads.

its 1150cc flat twin torque will eat many sports bikes , and your feet stay warm forever.

But this comes at a price! , in £££££ , and also in soul , BMWs I feel are very very capable but in the process have lost all their quirks and soul which make bikes bikes.

get some crash bars for it, BMW man once chased me and touched down his crash bars , if didn't have them he'd have ground his cylinder head away, and they look heavy but they aren;t a 1150GS weighs LESS than my NTV and due to flat twinage its weight is all low down.

Just look at it this way.

If your mate crashed his car on the motorway and suffered similar injuries would you still get into a car?

If the answer is yes then I cant see why it is different for bikes, for every crash with injuries like that there are hundreds more without.

Just look up the thread entitled BCF spill counter on here, plenty of non serious spills on there, may help give you another perspective and your wife too.

Dont let it put you off, my OH has just got a bike and I worrie to death but its something she wants to do so I let her do it.
Just be carefull, he had a low speed slide and come off bad but it dose not mean every body who has a low speed speed will come off the same.
I see pictures of bike crashes, even watch videos but it dosnt put me off.

My GP was like this recently at my post-accident check up, decided to lecture me on how dangerous bikes are.

I just replied: It's down to the numpty riding it, this time it was me.


I'd say carry on, but make sure the wife is definitely ok with it. Would you stop doing any given activity if you knew someone who had a bad experience with it?

You should've started riding before you had the mature adult fear of bikes.....then you'd see how fantastic riding is!

That said, I know a few people who've almost been 6 feet under due to bikes!

My doctor tried lecturing me on how dangerous bikes are so I told him that one serious accident in over 20 years of riding does not make me a bad rider and asked how many accidents had he had in his car?

He meekly replied 8 in 12 years of driving.

He hasn't attempted to lecture me since then.

Once you do your test you have to accept that at some point in your riding career you're going to crash.

Just try to minimize the chances.

Nah. Might be worth making sure you get extra lessons etc after your test, do an advanced course etc?

Yeah they cost a bit, and no they wont literally save you, but they increase your knowledge of riding and how to handle situations greatly, thus reducing the risk of fucking up.


Of course, in ANY vehicle...its not just the risk that you'll fuck up.

I think any bikers on here, myself included, can only say they are relaxed/confident on bikes because they fully accept the risks that are present. Just gotta be vigilant, I suppose. And vigilante, if someone fucks up and fucks you up

I'm a doctor. I ride a bike. I know loads of others who do. When I was in A&E I treated more car drivers than bikers. Any doc who lectures you about bikes being dangerous is just an arrogant w*nker who should live a little. I think it's a given that we know it's dangerous but so is crossing a road if you don't do it properly

thanks for that guys. Phil been in surgery from 9.30 this morning till 3.30 this afternoon he is said to be comfortable.

I have spoken to the wife again and i am going to do my test. But wait till my mate is up and about. Before i get a new bike so as not to rub it in. Reason i waited till i was 36 before doing this was i didnt trust my self when i was younger. I probably would be 6 foot under. I find it hard to believe he did so much damage to himself at such a slow speed of 30-40 mph but i suppose that is the way it goes.

TBH the wife has been really supportive think she wants rid of my but hey ho live life to the full.

Speed is only a factor in injury really
U can fall over bang your head on the ground and get killed.
Equally you can fall off a bike at 100mph, skim along the ground, get up and cry at the state of your bike.

Call it luck, or whatever belief you have, end of the day there are more dangerous things than bikes out there

30/40 isn't a low speed, but the most prominent problem is what your faced with as you crash(wall/car etc).
