Choosing a suit? Where from?

Hi guys,

I've got a wedding reception to go to on Saturday, and I need/want a suit, not just for the reception, but also for other evening occasions (I don't wear a work suit).

I want to spent about £200, was just wondering if I'd get a good one for that money, and what specifically should I be looking for? Also, what retailers should I use? (Are there a well known chain that are good?) failing that, any suggestions of a good shop in Liverpool would be appreciated! Smile

Moss Bross are having a sale atm, well worth a look..

failing that, Debenhams are quite good..

I'd avoid Burtons, TopMan and the other highstreet "fashion" stores, you'll be getting plastic fantastic there.

Can easily pick up a pure wool, quality suit for that money if you shop around.

As much as i hate the place, NEXT has some good quality suits and they do a package for about that money. Thumbs Up

If you have an outlet shopping centre near you then would certainly be worth a look there (obviously check if there is a suit perveyor theer first!). The centre near me has a Moss Bross, and it is all heavily discounted, and good stuff.

Got my last suits in Debenham's sale tho - Jeff Banks desgin (get me, I is a fashonista), two came to £300 in total.

I'd buy some used armani, or ralph lauren from ebay. Real genuine stuff, as it will have been cared for Razz

I found a really nice one in BHS believe it or not. It was not only one of the cheaper suits I saw all day, but also pretty much the nicest.

Think it set me back around £120, which would leave a fair bit for you to grab a few snazzy shirt and tie combos.

im a great believer in ebay, so if i was spending that much, id find out what size i was by trying on suites in a shop, and then buy a second hand designer one off ebay

if you were spending about £100 i'd recommend matalan, but dont know about £200 ones

Id also recommend getting several pairs of the matching trousers just one jacket.

Another vote for Debenhams, I picked up an Yves Saint Laurent suit there for £200. Thumbs Up

Dont buy a Ben Sherman suit, they are crap as are the cheaper Armani ones. We get a lot in the dry cleaners, they de-laminate after a short time ( interfacing comes away from the lapels & front). Once that happens the suit looks awful & you might as well throw it away.

Find a local quality tailor.

Spend a little more than what you are aiming for atm and get a proper classic suit made up. That way it can be used again in the future. Failing that I have a Debenhams one which is pretty good qualtiy. Think I paid about 250 all up for suit, shirt and tie.

Looks like there is one in Liverpool too.

You'll get it fitted properly, altered if necessary and an oppinion on its suitability. The assistants dance attention on you. Simply stand in the suit area and look lost, tell the guy what you want, how much you want to spend and he'll do the rest. They even loaned me a shirt and shoes to check the fit of the trousers when I bought my last suit. Altered it for free.

There's a website somewhere where they make made to measure suits, you give them your measurements and they knock one out.

Can't remember the url though, so a google would be in order.

Actually, I'd go to TK Maxx first. Call me a cheapskate, but I very nearly got a Calvin Klein suit in there which was about £250 reduced from £800. I decided I didn't need it, but Christ it was nice. Smile

PS - Feef - that is the case with Burton's cheap suits, all polyester. But their premium suits are 100% wool, and their premium price for a suit is well under Toby's budget. Thumbs Up

'Suits you' in Cheshire Oaks are doing an offer. A dinner jacket + matching trousers, wing collared shirt and a bow tie for £199. You can choose from several different styles. I bought one recently, and I am very pleased with my purchase. The quality of their products is excellent; as good as any suit I've ever bought or had made. The DJ's on offer normally sell for £400 to £450. The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful without being patronising; just the sort you need if you don't wear suits everyday and need a bit of help in deciding what fits you best.
They can also arrange for minor alterations if needed.
