How bad really is it?

Very tempted with a KLR 250 as my next commuter.

For cruising and so forth normally it's not too bad, wierd sensation but very much managable, it all gets to be rather fun when you start pushing it though and things start to slide around alot easier. . .

Very dicky in the wet or on shiny surfaces (which includes some bits of tarmac). Harder compound and less contact-patch.

Have to take it a bit easier, but can get surprising amounts of lean if you can handle the wobbly feeling.

However, you can get plenty of road-biased tyres for trail sizes.
Alternatively, you can go for trials tyres, which still offer pretty decent off road performance, but with smoother road riding.

Dual sport tyres like the tkc 80 and the mt21 are good for both off road and road.

I've got an MT21 rear and it's wearing pretty quickly. I wouldn't like to be using that day in day out on the road.

Doable with care. You can't brake though, that's worth remembering.

just gotta be slightly carefull on the brakes, but offroad bikes brakes suck anyway.

I think its worth having an extra front wheel, with a tyre with more road biased tyres on so you can switch between the two.

Or even just having a more road biased tyre on all the time.

I find that offroad, its more important to have an offroad rear tyre, but on-road, and offroad rear tyre isnt really a problem.

An offroad front tyre on wet cold roads is extremely dangerous in my opinon, and i have lost the front a few times without much provocation.

If you ride with a front offroad tyre and find yourself brakinging when not going completely straight, be prepared to quickly put your foot down to stop the bike going down.

I Binned the Ts250 on knobblies I rode through winter a few years ago twice.

Granted I was being a tit. They don't grip that badly - they just do not inspire confidence.

Bonus being when you're bored you can ride in the Hedge.

Ive only ever ridden with knobblies on road. Yes it is sketchy so just take it easy in the wet. (I mean really easy. Ive had the front/rear end out loads) I always have a foot down cos you kinda expect it to happen. In the dry though knobblies are fine. Just pump em up a bit (I run at about 23psi) cos road+knobblies@13psi isnt fun! I go round corners supermoto style on my DT with knobblies..

When you say knobblies do you mean proper knobblies or the XR-125 knobblies? Dual-sport or whatever they are called?

I know people who use trial tyres on road and swear by them. Ive only personally used pirelli offroad only tyres (Michelin AC10 style) and cheap nasty catspaw type tyres (pretty much road going knobblies). Ive only had problems when pushing it too much. Also I found the offroad only tyres better on road than the catspaw type.

by catspaw i mean like this...

No the nobblies on it have no sort of road bias about them at all.

The dealer's confident it'll get an MOT just fine, so I guess they're not proper proper knobblies.

Not sure that has to be illegal. Apparantly the law has changed in regards to the spacing allowed between the blocks.

That is certainly less spacing than the tyre on my CRM which they 'let go' but apparently was illegal by the new laws, though it wouldn't be by old laws.

There's some pretty serious enduro tyres sold which are still road legal.

I couldnt get an mot with that tyre. It isnt stamped not for road use (although it does say NHS.... Not Highway Safe? I dunno) and it isnt stamped saying its road legal so it wouldnt get me a certificate. Something to do with a DOT rating? Cant remember..

Well, I bit the bullet and bought a different KLR 250.

Here's the original one (and the tyres)
https://www.bikehutbristol.co.uk/vehpics/930-12048274571.jpg

I managed to barter him down to £650, but he wouldn't repair the exhaust, or get it an MOT for that money. So we parted ways.

So I bought this one on eBay. The new exhaust, road front tyre, mirrors and indicators swayed it for me. full mot and tax didn't hurt either.

https://i23.ebayimg.com/06/i/000/e0/8c/099e_12.JPG

£875, but extra money well spent I reckon.

Near salisbury, so some distance from you.

However, there should be some decent green lanes and the like in your area.
